Rome controlled a quarter of the known world at the time from 753 BC to 509 BC. The roman armies had well equipped and superior soldiers. When the soldiers weren’t fighting, they were bridge, road, and empire builders. The roman armies were well organised and their advanced weaponry, such as catapults, helped defeat many armies as did the sheer size of the roman army, with 28 legions and over 170,000 soldiers. (Ancient Rome, 2021) The main languages used in Rome was Latin. People and goods were transported by big carriages that could carry numerous items towed by animals; they were so heavy that it was often quite slow.
Some of the different ethnic/cultural groups living in Rome were the Ramnes, Tities, and the Luceres. The Ramnes represented Rome’s Latin Population, the Tities representing the Sabines and the Luceres representing the Etruscans.
Some of the main regions and cities are Bologna and Naples.

The significance of Saul’s conversion is that he was originally such a harsh critic of Christianity, yet later became the messenger of Jesus Christ, spreading the word of the Lord. Saul’s journey started with him being a critic and persecutor of Christians. The scriptures tell of his journey, where Saul gives orders for the people to stone Stephen to death as he is a Christian. While the stoning is happening, Stephen begs for life and says, “Lord forgive them for they know not what they are doing.” (Paul of Tarsus (Saint Paul), 2021) Saul is later given permission to chase down the heretics in Damascas. On his way there he has guilty thoughts about how Stephen was forgiving even those who were killing him. Saul is struck by a bright light and a voice from Jesus asking why he is persecuting him. He is then blinded and on receiving baptism can see. On Mount Sinai he decided his purpose was to spread the word of the Lord.

In journey 3, Paul went back to some of the Christian places he had visited in the past, including a group called Ephesus. (2021) Here he preached against worshiping false gods such as Armetis, who was a local goddess. This made the locals angry, particularly the local traders and silversmiths who created images of the local goddess. As a result of this, Paul and his friends had to face an angry mob.

Paul wrote the letter to both the Jewish and the Gentile Christians in Rome in order to persuade them to build up a peaceful and close relationship between their house churches. In a brief epistle, Paul wrote to Philemon, a wealthy Christian of Colossal, on behalf of Onesimus, Philemon's former slave. While passing no judgment on slavery itself, Paul encourages Philemon to manifest true Christian love that removes barriers between slaves and free people. (Paul the Apostle, 2021) Of the thirteen letters that Paul wrote, the earliest letters were to encourage new believers about living in a Christian manner. 

Paul thought that membership in the body of Christ really changed people, so that they would live accordingly. He thought that his converts were dead to sin and alive to God and that conduct flowed naturally from people, varying according to who they really were.

In one of Paul’s early letters, described in the Bible in Romans 12:14-21 Paul writes “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position.” In this Paul discusses the different classes of people and how everyone should live in harmony with each other. On another occasion, Paul says “When among the gentiles, I acted as a gentile, and when among the Jews, I acted as Jew; I was all things to all men.” (Paul the Apostle, 2021)

Paul's job was to bring “the good news” to the gentiles. Almost everything he writes about the Law is about this. The Law of Moses was never believed to be applied to the gentiles in Israelite tradition, and therefore gentiles need not be subject to circumcision, dietary laws, or Sabbath regulations. These three became the focus, as they are physical rituals that keep communities separated, and Paul wanted to break down barriers between neighbourhoods.

In the Bible, Paul writes “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
 if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.”  (BibleGateway, Paul of Tarsus, 2021) I apply and interpret this message today in a similar phrase from Jesus, that is "Treat others how you would want to be treated". Another modern day interpretation of that message relates to the broader group of friends that I have at Mount Alvernia College, where some of the girls in this broader group are not friendly to me, for reasons I am not aware of. Following in Paul's footsteps, I have been kind to them and treated them how I would like them to treat me.
