Participant has noted how difficult the transition can be trying to live in a new country. He has stated that he had to assimilate and accommodate different forms of living. The biggest one was learning English. He knew that without knowing English, it would be difficult to get by. As a result, he taught himself English.

Advice for future teachers:

Advice, my participant, would give future teachers is to provide equitable opportunities for students. This can be done by asking the students questions about what they need help with/want to learn. Sometimes the easiest way to attend to student’s needs is by involving their opinions. My participant highlighted that teachers should reach out to parents more since sometimes teachers can seem intimidating.

My participant’s linguistic and cultural background shapes their identity by being a part of two different cultures. He resonates most with his Mexican side since that has been his most extended identity and the most comfortable one. He has to switch to his American sense of self at work because his clients mostly speak English. As a result, he communicates with them in English.

How does your participant’s linguistic and cultural background inform their beliefs about the connection between language, culture, and education?

My participant's linguistic and cultural background plays a role in connecting language, culture, and education. Knowing English in America is essential in language, and without it, you are more likely to struggle in school. As an immigrant, he felt that his culture was not appreciated in America even though America seems to be so welcoming. In education, my participant has noticed several bias towards minorities and those who are English Language Learners.

Other question: For generations listening to this years from now, is there any wisdom you’d want to pass on to them? What would you want them to know?
