Common Uses of the Present Perfect

1. Actions that occurred at an unspecified time

The Present Perfect is used to talk about actions that occurred in the past at an unspecified time. This means that we don't know exactly when the action occurred, or it's not important to know. What's important is the event itself, not the exact moment.

Structure:

Subject + have/has + past participle of the verb.

Examples:

I have visited London.

We don't specify when London was visited; it's just that it was done at some point in the past.

She has read that book.

It doesn't matter when she read it, the important thing is that she already did it.

2. Actions that have occurred recently

The Present Perfect is also used to talk about actions that have occurred at a recent time and that have a connection to the present. It is often used with adverbs like just, already, yet, recently, lately.

Structure:

Subject + have/has + just + past participle of the verb (when the action has just happened).

Subject + have/has + already + past participle of the verb (when the action happened earlier than expected).

Subject + have/has + yet + past participle of the verb (for questions or negations in recent situations).

Examples:

I have just eaten breakfast. (I just had breakfast.)

The action happened very recently, and it is relevant in the present.

She has already finished her homework.

(She has already finished her homework.)

The action was completed earlier than expected or before a reference time.

They haven’t called yet. (They haven’t called yet.)

They are expected to call soon, but it hasn’t happened yet.
