Representing the Scottsboro boys were Stephen Roddy and Milo Moody, who had little experience and were underpaid. six of the boys denied the rape occurred and were unaware that the women were on the train, while three of the boys said that they only did so because of threats made by the women.

After four trials eight of the nine boys were convicted and sentenced to death, however, in January of 1932 seven of the eight convictions were affirmed by the Alabama Supreme Court, but the cases were appealed by the U.S. Supreme Court, causing more trials. In July of 1937, seven of the nine boys had been in prison for six years. In the final trial two of the boys recieved charges of 75 and 99 years in prison, one received 20 years for assaulting a deputy, and the remaining four had all of their charges dropped from them.
