These are the words children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight (can read in a snap) without having to use any strategies to decode. 
Sight words are often words that don't follow conventional spelling patterns so sounding them out is difficult and why a student should instead memorize them. 
When students have a wealth of sight words their reading fluency and comprehension improves.
