The proxy war can be seen over multiple areas over the cold war. In some cases it was not giving funds but taking sides. The UN against fighting with Nuclear Weapons that might have led to utter destruction. Or what happened in South Vietnam, many people were funded to fight not WITH but for the soul purpose of keeping their land and keeping certain thoughts out of their countries.

The Korean War is a lot like the current Russia/Ukraine conflict right now. Other countries are funding their favorable side. But in our (US) case the United States along with other European countries are funding Ukraine with sullipes and money but NO troops. This is very similar to what the United States did to Korea.
