         <description><![CDATA[<p>Deep Sea hydrothermal vent ecosystems are found along mid ocean ridges where tectonic plates diverge. These ecosystems are in complete darkness, usually thousands of meters below the ocean surface, where extremely hot, water packed with minerals is released from the seafloor. Despite extreme conditions, they support a wide range of unique life forms (Van Dover, 2000).</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>There is a relationship between giant tube worms and bacteria.</p><ul><li><p>Tube worms don’t have mouths or stomachs. Instead, they have bacteria living inside them.</p></li><li><p>The tube worm brings the bacteria the chemicals from the vent water.</p></li><li><p>In return, the bacteria make food for the worm (Cavanaugh et al., 1981).</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <title>The ecosystem&#39;s biggest threat</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>One big threat is deep sea mining. People want to collect metals from around the vents.</p><ul><li><p>Mining can destroy the vent structures.</p></li><li><p>If the vents are damaged, the bacteria can’t survive.</p></li><li><p>Without the bacteria, tube worms and other animals also die off (Van Dover et al., 2018).</p></li></ul><p>This messes up the whole ecosystem and it can take a really long time for it to recover...if it even does at all (Gollner et al., 2017).</p>]]></description>
