In my opinion, the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 profoundly transformed the world. Before this innovation, books were meticulously copied by hand, a slow and expensive process that limited literacy to a very small segment of the population.

Gutenberg's press revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge. Suddenly, books could be produced much more quickly and cheaply. This led to a massive increase in the availability of texts, which in turn fueled the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. Ideas and information, which had once been confined to monasteries and royal courts, spread rapidly across Europe. People began to question established authorities more freely as they gained access to diverse perspectives. The widespread availability of printed materials played a crucial role in the standardization of languages and the development of national identities. Ultimately, the printing press democratized knowledge and laid the groundwork for modern education systems and the scientific revolution.
