-The handling of the war by the provisional govt: they decided to continue the war, which was against the will of the people who wanted an end to the war and their suffering
-The Bolsheviks took advantage of this and promised to stop the war
-This allowed them to garner support for the Soviets and successfully stage a communist revolution 

3) How did Lenin and Trotsky run the country before the rise of Stalin?
-War communism: during the civil war that ensued after the communist revolution, the Bolsheviks implemented war communism.
-Trotsky as a military leader of the Red Army: He was a great orator and was able to rally his men. He was also wise in identifying his own shortcomings and allowed his generals to run the war
