A Basic Synopsis on Colby

Colby is a beta, poopy, cry-cry, pee-his-pants boy, but seriously, most of the story involves Colby trying to grasp the situation at hand. In the beginning, Colby is a very creative minded character, often seen drawing someone/something in such fashion. Throughout the story, Colby has some character development, and by some, I mean a very small and unnoticed change. The major key being that Colby finally lets go of Bev at the end and continues his conquest to Europe with Jasper.

Bev, Destroyer of Colby

Bev can be summed up into 3 words: Dark Souls Boss. Bev is Colby's Dark Souls Boss in some sense as it can be compared to the average Dark Souls player's first time playing the game. At first, when you fight your first Dark Souls Boss, you will get flattened, quite a few times in fact with very little progress. Colby does in fact get figuratively flattened by Bev's vagueness and demeanor with little progress. As the Dark Souls player encounters this boss over and over, they will begin to learn from their mistakes, either forcefully or willingly. Colby finds himself surprisingly willing to adapt to Bev's dismissals, and actually makes good progress when confronting Bev about her choices. Now, for the last stage, when the Dark Souls player defeats the boss. Here, in the last stage, Colby kinda defeats his boss. He moves on from Bev and does his own thing, which would be considered as defeating his Dark Souls boss.

The first problem that ultimately starts a domino effect throughout the book is when Bev confesses to Colby that she cannot go to Europe with him. Leading up to this, we see Colby and Bev planning out a trip to Europe when school ends. “-that Bev and I were actually doing it. Leaving together after graduation. Going to Europe.” (tD pg. 10) Throughout the beginning of the book, we read that Colby is ready for this trip, and shows genuine passion as he references multiple times that Bev and him have been planning this for a while, all until Bev confesses to him at a gas station that she had applied and had been accepted for college making Colby disappointed that the many months and years of planning were for nothing.

The second dilemma, which recurs a few times throughout the novel. After some of the shows that The Disenchantments perform, we see Bev go off and make herself ‘comfortable’ with a few people, which also happens to be in Colby’s field of view. These actions raised jealousy as he sees Bev making out with different individuals as she knows the effect her beauty has on people, when he himself always wanted what she was giving. “I scan the room for her and find her off to one side, talking to some guy who must be at least Walt’s age… Bev pulls away from him and gives him this look, all aloof and mysterious but also inviting, and even though I’ve seen her give that look a million times before, it makes me sick...it’s even worse that she’s doing it in front of me.” (tD pg. 64)

This sadness also turns into a form of resentment.
