If my administration asked me to learn something new for the betterment of our school and I say my administration was also willing to learn it as well, it goes to show me that I shouldn't have any fear if they do not as well.

Be open in letting others solve problems with their ideas. Leaders should not impose a specific way to solve a problem. To truly motivate and inspire others, leaders must allow for others to be creative in problem solving so that people can see the value in their work and learn to solve problems with the help of others rather than just following the directive of one person. When I am given a job by leadership on campus, but am also given the freedom to accomplish that job with my own creativity, it allows me to think that my work is valued and that they trust me in doing this job. There is more than one way to solve a puzzle.

Be human. The strongest leaders that I have seen on my campus have always shown that they too make mistakes, struggle with many similar issues, and often ask for help. They show that they are not some perfect person that never has issues and always has the right answer, but that they continue to learn at their job and in life. Being yourself and showing others that, as a leader, you are also human and not perfect gives others the opportunity to see a leader that is similar to themselves. It also allows for people to possibly see themselves as a leader and to help the leader with whatever problems or issues because we do not want to see each other struggle.

Make good judgement calls. Effective leaders make good judgement calls and it isn't by coincidence or chance. When making a judgement call, the text book says that effective leaders go through three different phases when making a judgement decision: preparation, decision-making based on storyline, and implementation. During preparation, leaders identify the key issues and get the key members they are working with to understand the importance of the decision while gathering input from the members they have chosen to work with. In the decision-making based on storyline phase, the decision must be made in line with the identity and mission of the school along with the vision of the leader. Making sure that the decision fits the story of the organization is important so that the people within the organization know that the leader has the interest of the organization in mind. The last phase in implementation is when the organization does the action of the decision and implements it correctly and willfully. If the results from the decision are off or wrong, the leader can be honest with the team and come back together to work on the issue again with the trust of the team.

When leaders implement the three phases of making a judgement call, they focus on people, strategy, and critical response. These make the greatest contributions to the wellbeing of the organization. Inspiring key people and getting them involved in the plans based on the judgement calls increases the chance of success of the plan. Mapping out a strategy and being able to explain the mapping to the people gives them to see a roadmap that they can execute and increases the chance of success. Dealing with crisis response will happen eventually. A bad decision or a bad call will be made and being able to own up to it early allows for those in the group to gain the trust of the leader because they know that the leader will not continue to steer them in the wrong direction. It also allows the leader to receive input in redirecting the plans and giving the people working with the leader an opportunity to share their ideas and thoughts, making it a more communal approach to the crisis response, giving it a better chance of creating a successful new plan.
