The main point of the story is that even though Max shows bad behavior, his mother will always love him the most. The illustrations in this story are very detailed and make reading the story more enjoyable.

Teaching Points: The story can be used to teach repetition, connectives, and/or punctuation. Another fun idea includes discussing the setting (habitat) of the jungle that grows in Max's room.

I enjoyed the happy ending of the story, as well as the different emotions shown in both the illustrations, as well as in the text.

Teaching Points: When teaching about themes, this book can be used for students to identify the different themes present.

Date: August 28

Audience: (age 5+) I would recommend this book to children who find bats fascinating and want to know more about them.

Review: This book does a great job of combining a fun story along with real science about bats and birds. There are a couple of different emotions felt throughout reading the book, starting with sadness that eventually turns into relief/happiness. The overall lesson I gathered from the story was self-acceptance, due to Stellaluna having to adapt to how the birds did things. I really enjoyed how the illustrations made bats look pleasant, even though they are usually viewed as scary.

Teaching Points: Teachers can use this story to teach acceptance of others, as well as the importance of being yourself. Along with life lessons, the book is filled with interesting facts about bats that can be used when teaching animal groups and their characteristics.

Clifford grows to be the biggest dog in the world, but he is best known for his advice and friendship he offers to Emily. The two share lots of adventures together. I would recommend this book to all children of any age, especially those who love dogs and friendships.

Teaching Points: This story could be used to teach friendship, as well as what it means to be respectful. Throughout the book, Clifford finds himself in a mess more than once. But no matter what happens, nor how big Clifford grows, Emily loves and accepts him always.

Date: September 7

Audience: (age 10+) I would recommend this book to children who are trouble makers at school.

Review: I believe this book is more enjoyable for an adult to read, rather than a child, mainly because David's behavior can be relatable to that of the reader's own child. This book can still be enjoyed by children, but more than likely only for the pictures. David acts crazy at school and at home, but at the end of the day, David's mom is always there with arms wide open. I do not think I would recommend this book to children or my students.

Teaching Points: This book can be used to make teaching classroom rules humorous instead of boring. This book also contains the usage of punctuation, making it a great example when teaching punctuation and reviewing.

But then things take a turn for the worse as bad food starts raining down and causes many problems for the town. Luckily, there is a happy ending. The illustrations in this book tell a lot of the story, and allow for readers to use their imagination. It is important to know that the weather can change anytime, but there are ways to adapt.

Teaching Points: Teachers can use this book as a fun and different way to view precipitation and weather. I liked how the author used things like teeth, book pages, and clothing to show the microbes because these are all things that children know of and have access to in their lives. The speech bubbles from the microbes were very cute, but informational at the same time.

Teaching Points: The characters in the book are microbes, which are living things, and are taught in Science. The different microbes inhabit different habitats, therefore the book can be used as a fun way to look at different habitats as well as living things.

He has a pet ghost named Squiggle, who has squiggle power. This power allows him to do swish and swoosh very fast and wherever he wants. They go on adventures together, and they even meet a yellow and pink monster! He comes off as scary, but they eventually realize they he is nice and they become friends. All of the illustrations in this book are colored in blue, white, and green. That is until they meet the pink and yellow monster. I loved how cute the characters are in the illustrations, and their friendship is adorable.

Teaching Points: There are lots of onomatopoeias in this story. Teachers could use this book for an example of some onomatopoeias found in adventurous stories.

Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute - Jarrett Krosoczka

With the help of her 'Breakfast Brunch,' as well as the other lunch lady Betty, the crew is able to save the day every time. In this story specifically, the team is after the suspicious substitute teacher that is acting strange at school. I believe kids can really relate to this story because it takes place in a school, and the characters are around the same age as the readers. This book is quite humorous, and all of the illustrations are drawn in black, grey, and yellow on white pages.
4. Teaching Points: Teachers can utilize this book to show students the different emotions characters in the story feel by looking at the illustrations. There is even a point in the story where Moe, Terrence, and Dee are bullied, and this can be used to teach students how to respond to bullying.

He asks his friend Nicky (that is covered in freckles) where he got them from. Another girl Sharon, the girl who teases everyone, hears Andrew ask Nicky about his freckles and decides she would trick him into thinking he can get freckles from a secret recipe. He even pays five weeks of allowance for it! Even though it didn't work, Andrew found a way to have some and then decided he didn't like them after all. Out of nowhere, a girl named Betty moves in next door, and she is quite the nightmare. Betty threatens and even tries to hurt Annabelle, but luckily, a homeless WW1 veteran (Toby) is able to save Annabelle. Now both of them are enemies of Betty and she will do anything to make sure everyone in town knows that Annabelle and Toby are to blame. Towards the end of the story, Toby is shot to death and Annabelle's family bury him on their land since he had no family of his own. Although I loved this suspenseful story, I did not like the ending at all. My favorite kind of story! The main character, Luna, is taken from her family as a baby so that she can be used as a sacrifice for an evil ritual. Luckily, a good witch (Xan) comes and rescues her, but takes her magical powers away until she turns 13 years old. There is lots of action, adventure, sadness, happiness, and suspense in this story. The main character, Jonas, lives in a society that is very controlling and the people have no say in their futures. Jonas was given the role of "receiver of memory," and is only allowed certain privileges because of this. After learning that everyone is killed after they are released from society, Jonas hears of a plan to steal Gabriel away so that he can survive. The ending of this story is kind of how you make it based on the events leading up to it. Either the two of them survived and made it to the "elsewhere," or they died from the cold trying to make it there. I guess this could be seen as interesting because not everyone will have the same thought on what they believed happened.

Teaching Points: This story would be great for identifying plots since the plot of this story was so large and all over the place!

The other animals at the dance discouraged Gerald and told him that giraffe cannot dance. Luckily, a cricket was able to give him some good advice. Then Gerald started to dance to his own song! I loved the happy ending in this story as well as the illustrations.

Teaching Points: This story can be used when teaching predictions, character emotions, and themes. I have always loved Dr. Seuss books and how strange their characters and stories are. But this story was very cute and sweet, and involves a little guy known as the Lorax. He just wants to save the trees since a new guy in town is cutting all of them down to make clothing. But the new guy doesn't take the advice from the Lorax and soon after there in nothing left but open, dead land with no trees.
