They knew each other relatively well, but they had their disagreements over the permissions the corregidor had over how he collected labor for the Potosí mines. After their lunch and a light nap, Tupac Amaru invited Arriaga to sleep in his home over night. Arriaga said that he would return to Tinta (the largest town in the area and his hometown) instead and began his path home. Tupac Amaru and a few other men traveled with him for a while but then pretended to head back. Anyone who spoke Spanish or even appeared European was immediately executed rather than taking their prisoners. Between 80 and 100,000 people were brutally murdered. Many people assumed that Tupac Amaru began this movement purely for the thought of independence, but it was really for his own interests. He continued to push into Cisco (capital of the Inca Lineage) but was met with strong reinforcements from Cusco’s war council. After much thought, he decided not to take Cusco. After this decision he took a moment to look back on his army and noticed the conditions were quickly deteriorating.
