The reason that I think it is the flu is because of the conditions he was in when he was found. He was found in the cold on the side of the street, wearing tattered clothes, and his state of mind was insane. He could only say the word Reynolds. Him sitting in the cold like that left him prone to catching diseases (the flu), and his doctor stated his condition as too sick to travel.
