The basic understanding of Human Dignity

The USCCB states human dignity as "As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world of greater respect for human life and greater commitment to justice and peace."

Connecting to the principle of Call to Family, Community, and Participation

Human dignity is connected to this principle in many ways. First, human life is sacred but humans are also very social beings that develop families and communities. Next, humans must receive and give each other respect so by living together in communities they thrive off of each other. Lastly, all humans have a right to life. With families we are encouraging that right by producing children into the family and the community.

How the Church Participates Today

One of human dignity’s biggest goals is to defend life. That is why the Catholic Church faces the issue of abortion. In times like these we need to take action to defend life. Such as Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York who has invited Catholics around the country to join him in his “9 Days for Life” campaign. This is the annual prayer and action campaign in response to the 1973 decision to legalize abortion. This year it occurred from January 21st to January 29th and was an excellent example as to how the Catholic community can participate in defending human dignity.
