The environmental issues you have identified in your answer to the first exercise are likely to be complex and difficult to unravel, yet alone resolve. Rather than attempt that at this stage I'd like to start this section with another question. Where does our material prosperity come from? To which one short answer would be 'The Industrial Revolution'. In the space of less than 100 years between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, first Britain, then several other countries completely transformed the nature of their economies. By looking briefly at the development of the industrial economy which underpins our present societies, we may hope to gain some insights into topical concerns. You can gain some of these insights through reading Tim Jackson's chapter 'Material transitions: the birth of the industrial economy' in Material Concerns: pollution, profit and quality of life. In this chapter he describes the massive increase in energy use, obtained by burning fossil fuels, which powered the development of new industries, transport and a massive throughput of material, and also allowed a large increase in the UK population.

The Industrial Revolution impacted the environment and the whole planet saw a major increase in population. which, also increased living standards causing depletion of natural resources. The use of chemicals in fuel factories caused an increase of air and water pollution and an increase of the use of fossil fuels which is slowly stuffing up the planet so no chemicals dumb asses.

Environmental Effects of the Industrial Revolution

Some of the impacts caused by the Industrial Revolution are positive, while others are negative. One of the short term effects of the Industrial Revolution was the rapid population growth. Today in the industrialised nations, this growth has slowed down, but continues to raise rapidly in the developing world. It is estimated that the world’s population will exceed eight billion by 2027. This number is unsustainable and is placing the world’s resources at risk from overuse.

The Industrial Revolution introduced new sources of air and water pollution. In the production of steam power, coal is burnt, which produces smog that hung over the factory towns and cities. The British didn’t realise that fossil fuels such as coal could run out. Carbon dioxide is produced when fossil fuels are burnt. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and traps heat within the atmosphere. Since we have burnt huge quantities of fossil fuels, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased which is affecting the atmosphere’s average temperature.

Jad Saeed
