This is the first and arguably the most important stage of Erikson's development timeline. In this stage, infants learn to either trust the adults in their life or not. If a parent or guardian of a child cannot provide to the level necessary for infants, the children will have a harder time believing that there are people in the world that are there to help them. It has physical repurcussions on the child as well: "Undernourshied children are at a high risk for stunted growth and poor health" (Child).

At this stage, children start to gain independence in their lives. They can begin to do things on their own and begin the process of learning how to take care of yourself. Things like potty training and having preferences happen in this stage. There is lots of physical growth also. According to Child, boys are generally around 40 inches at the age of 3 and girls are 36 inches.
