Wade blank worked with young disabled residents at a nursing home. At the nursing home, he realized quickly that it was inappropriate for people with disabilities to have to live in an institution. He fought for disabled people and helped start a Center for Independent Living. In 1978, Wade and nineteen people with disabilities organized the first demonstration to demand accessible buses by blocking traffic in a busy intersection in Denver. The group called itself ADAPT (American Disabled for Accessible Public Transportation).

Ed Roberts contracted polio at the age of fourteen in 1953, spending eighteen months in hospitals and returning home paralyzed from the neck down. Ed Roberts could only move two fingers. Roberts and his family had to fight the high school to allow him to attend. Roberts had to fight again when trying to attend college. Later in life, Roberts helped the student group start the first Center for Independent Living. The center was a radical approach to programs for disabled people because it was run by people with disabilities instead of medical professionals. After that, Roberts became the first person with a disability to serve as the Director of California's Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The movement started because disabled people weren't getting same opportunities as others. Some disabled people weren't allowed to go to high school or college. It was much more difficult for a disabled person to get a job, if they could even get one at all. People who needed to use wheelchairs couldn't even get to some places because there generally weren't ramps.

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law to ensure that people with disabilities are protected from discrimination in employment, public services, public accommodations and telecommunications. On September 25, 2008, George W. Bush signed the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 to broaden the definition of disability to extend protections to a greater number of people. There have also been lawsuits against businesses that didn't comply with the ADA.

I believe that the movement has been fairly successful. The ADA being signed into law is very important for this movement. Disabled people are seen as equal more now than ever before, but that doesn't mean that the movement is over. There are still businesses out there that aren't complying with the ADA and disabled people still are not seen as completely equal in every aspect of life. Even though I believe the movement has been successful so far, the movement is far from over.
