Forensic engingeers are a specific branch of detectives. These are more of detectives who are called into situation where there are some kind of machinery involved. They would go and collect evidence and carry out the process of analysing the evidence. For example they would be called if someone were ot be killed in a car accident. They would either collect evidence or analaysize evidence and in some cases they would do both.

In 2007 the F-15 Eagle fighter jet crashed during a military exercise due to unknown reasons. This resulted in all F-15 eagles being grounded. There had been a team of forensic engineers from a governmental agency dispatched on the case. They had trouble finding out what had been the problem since most fighter jets are designed to hide their engineering. They had eventually determined that a longeron had not been up to standard and only now became evident after 25 years of service. This led to 160 F-15 fighter jets being grounded indefinitely and sparked a lawsuit by the pilot of the aircraft. The pilot had been able to eject however he had been left with a 10-in metal plate lodged in his arm. This led to him winning the suit against Boeing and consequently created better-designed fighter jets. https://youtu.be/2R7BWrqmgac

Me personally I wouldn't want to become a forensic engineer. I think it is a cool career but I don't want to commit to get a bachelor's degree and a masters degree/Ph.D plus the 4 years of experience just to get a little more than 70,000 a year. I understand that the longer I am one the more I get paid but I personally don't think it's truly worth it.
