Participation in PE is influenced differently at certain stages in an individuals life, overcoming and finding counters to this barrier is the main premise of increasing participation in Physical education, current barriers as supported by Allender S et al. (2006) include:

Participation for young people was found to be more enjoyable when children were not forced to compete and win, but instead found that when a positive environment is facilitated, and young people are encouraged to experiment participation increases. MachPhail et al (2003) investigated participation and concluded that providing children with a variety of sporting activities encouraged participation. In younger children security is also a massive factor when encouraging the participation of PE as supported by Bodstock L (2001) where parents discouraged their children from participating in physical education where the environment is deemed unsafe.

When it comes to teens the main factor affecting participation is shape and weight management, particularly in females. Porter S, (2002) found that a pressure to conform to popular ideas of beauty was an important reason when it came to being physically active

Participation in physical activity for adults was linked to a sense of achievement, development of a skill and to take productive time away from daily responsibilities Crone-Grant (1999). One method identified particularly when it comes to adults was the development/sanctioning of sport related programs this can include referral schemes/free gym days/ get equipped etc

The most important one could potentially be the uptake of sport after GCSE because we could say about the impact on the nhs being lower if more people exercised and the reduced mental health they might have to deal with. The dropout rate of sport also seems higher so it’s a relevant subject to research.
