By Gianna Gulasey

Giovanni da Verrazano was an Italian explorer who was sent to travel the Atlantic Coast of North America by King Francis I of France in the 1520s. After he made it to South Carolina he traveled North where he eventually discovered New York Harbor. (Which now has a bridge spanning over it named after Da Verrazano) He later made two more trips back to North America. On his second (and last) voyage he and his crew had drifted from the East coast of Florida to the Caribbean Sea. They spotted a heavily vegetated island in the Caribbean sea. They dropped anchor at the island and Giovanni and a few of his crew members got out to explore. He and his crew was attacked and eaten by a cannibalistic tribe, while his brother and rest of the crew helplessly watched from the boat.

The Verrazno Bridge
