My Perception To The Overtime Dilemma: The Immediate Reality of Anna To Filipino People.

The case of Anna from “The Overtime Dilemma”, highlights the relevant tension between personal values and workplace culture demands, an immediate reality of a Filipino worker whose personal boundaries are set and anchored to culture, however environmental intervention and pressure intervenes. The story explicitly identifies Anna’s consistent behavior of respect of time by consistently speaking the importance of setting boundaries even to her colleagues. While, her inconsistency is shown when the pressure of damaged reputation comes into mind, which violates her original principle of time when she complied with her manager’s request, abiding and working overtime every night.

This relates to an influential theory called the theory of reasoned action or planned behavior. Which assumes that people behave in a sensible and rational manner and links beliefs to behavior. This best explains Anna's dilemma as her behavior is shaped by three factors: attitudes toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control.

Figure 1: Framework of TPB

While Anna’s attitude toward overtime is negative, the subjective norms which are her workplace culture and expectations of her manager, and her perceived lack of control which she fears harming her career future prospects, heavily influenced her final choice. In this case, the external pressure of workplace expectations outweighed her personal values, leading her to act against her attitude.

Personally, I see that attitude-behavior consistency is often strongest when individuals feel empowered and confident to act on their values without fear of negative consequences, the consistency is strengthened and therefore made positively distinct to define one as a person. However, man cannot live in an isolated attitude alone, this highlights now the salient complexity of consistency, where external stimulus, culture, pressure to authority and social expectations have become an extraneous variable to protect the consistent behavior.

To conclude, this is the reality of most Filipino people, could even be universal. The battle of personal ethics and principle against the demand of the working industry. How about you, will you do what Anna did?

Reference:

Theory of planned behavior. (n.d.).
