I believe that the purpose of school is to educate students and prepare them to become contributing members of society. Schools should provide students with a number of different outlets to develop their knowledge and passions. This requires developing the complete child, on academic, social and emotional levels.

Who Should Decide Cirriculum...

I believe that school curriculum should be decided with a collaborative effort. Obviously all schools and school districts need to have leaders and I think it is important for leaders to be willing to listen and hear input from other before making a final decision. I believe that school leaders should receive input form teachers, parents and students (of a certain age) when deciding what is going to be taught in schools. If there isn’t buy in from teachers, students and parents then ultimately it will be difficult to teach any subject effectively.

Defnining "Cirriculum"

I define curriculum as outline of the skills and knowledge that students are expected to understand throughout their education. Ideally a comprehensive curriculum involves more than just academics and it focuses on developing students in their relationships, behaviors and career orientations. I believe collaboration is best practice for carrying out a comprehensive curriculum. All parties involved should have input on the development of the curriculum as well as clear defined roles for who is responsible for ensuring that students complete the curriculum and fulfill their potential.

Individualized Cirriculums

I do believe that there should be a different curriculum for each student. However it is necessary to have a general curriculum that can be adapted and altered for all students. We want every student to graduate from high school with particular skills and abilities to prepare them for life beyond school. With that said, there needs to be different expectations for students of different ability levels. We want each student to be able to pursue their passions while being challenged to reach their potential. This may require altering a course or a particular lesson to take into account each individual student needs and abilities.

I will be working in the counseling department as a high school this fall. Within the counseling department we have our own curriculum we need to meet for each student throughout grades 9-12. This curriculum usually focuses heavily on career and academic development. Counselors also play a huge role in scheduling and course selection at our school. Often time’s students will have potential colleges in mind and it is important to understand each schools specific requirements. Counselors are also responsible for ensuring that IEP and 504 requirements are meant for specific students. This requires working with teachers to modify and adapt general curriculum for each individual student.

Overall, I believe the curriculum used at my school matches my philosophy on curriculum. At the high school level they provide students with opportunities to take control of their own educations and pursue their passions while remaining within the confines of a school wide curriculum. They also do a lot of work with surveys to incorporate students, teachers and parents in many school decisions including curriculum.
