Public Liability Insurance

When working as a free lance makeup it is extremely important that before you start working with the public you get your insurance. For most makeup artists it costs under £60 to get covered for a year. I have gone online and researched different companies and the prices that they charge. This is one of the links that I found useful. https://www.simplybusiness.co.uk/welcome/insurance/public-liability/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=InsurancePL2&utm_term=public%20liability%20insurance%20quotes%20online&utm_content=PL%20quote%20-%20exact
Public Liability Insurance is very important, it is so crucial to have because if your business is ordered to pay damages for causing injury or property damage, public liability insurance will cover these costs as well as any associated legal or hospital fees. Even when you as a freelancer does everything right, for example; using clean brushes, always doing skin tests and having a consultation with your client prior to their appointment there is always the chance of an accident happening. With ensuring that you have the right insurance cover, a business can operate knowing that if the worst happened, you are covered.

Makeup Kit & Brushes

As a makeup it is obvious that you need to use the highest quality of makeup for your clients as it is what they pay for. When starting freelance you need <del>to</del> ensure that all your makeup kit is clean, tidy and works for all customers. When first starting the college course a fee of £365 was required to first start building our kit. This was purchased and had all the basics that would be needed to complete a standard makeup look. These were ordered from Treasure House Of Makeup. However most makeup artists now a days use more popular brands such as MAC, Illamasqua & Makeup Forever. Therefore clients expect to have those brands used on their faces when coming to get their makeup done professionally. So i went online on ordered 5 different MAC foundation shades, these were £22 each.http://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/13847/1231/Products/Makeup/Face/Foundation/Studio-Fix-Fluid-SPF-15?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-ShoppingFeed-_-Face-_-Foundation&gclid=CKaT-Yv0jM8CFYgK0wodnJ4Oxw&gclsrc=aw.ds From Illamasqua i also purchased the white foundation and the dark foundation shade so that when working free lance i would always be able to mix and create a desired colour. Within your kit i also find the key to creating a good makeup look is the brushes that you use, therefore i think that spending more money on better brushes improves the quality of the finished look. When working freelance it is always important that your brushes are clean, in-between clients using IPA liquid, this is a quick and simple solution for cleaning your brushes in a short time and not having to wait for your brushes to dry. However, using this all the time won't be good for your brushes, therefore after each day give your brushes a proper clean with baby shampoo or a brush bath soap and allow them to dry naturally. By always carrying clean brushes it ensures that clients know you are taking care of their skin and are prepared.

Social Media

When working free lance in 2016 social media is one of the most important things to ensure that you are getting recognised. From social media future and current clients can see the skills you are offering and how you are improving. It also allows for businesses and employers to see the work that you are doing. Instagram is one of the most popular forms of social media that freelance makeup artists are using, and it is from this that freelance artists gain the most work. Keep it updated with special offers, photographs and make up tips and always respond to a customer as soon as you can, by showing good customer service from the beginning it instantly creates a professional feel and it makes the client feel important. It will also stick in their minds when people ask what they thought of you and whether or not you were professional when booking a client in. As a freelance makeup artist it is important to try and encourage your clients to leave comments and reviews on your instagram page and offer special discounts to you followers. This will increase your followers as well as boosting your clientel. I feel like customers will like the fact they can quickly book an appointment with you by sending a message via social media, rather than having to call up and actually spend time over the phone making an appointment.

Equipment

As i previously stated, social media is a very important aspect of working freelance. However by promoting yourself via Instagram and Facebook it is important that you make sure you are displaying the very best work you can, professional images that look better than other freelance artists. You need to make sure that you stand out from everyone else. To stand out i feel that you need to make sure your images are of a high quality, popular current trends and that you display information and tips on how you completed the look. This is why i feel that using good equipment such as a good camera, spot lights and a ring light will improve the images that you choose to upload and really improve the quality of how your makeup looks. Although ring lights are quite expensive i have been online and researched the cheapest ring light i could find. http://www.bresseruk.com/bresser-mm-23-ring-tl-daylight-lamp-75w.html?gclid=COrK5Ov5jM8CFdMK0wodHvUOVQ
When you go onto Instagram and look at free lance artists i always feel that the better quality of an image the better the makeup looks. If you create a amazing makeup look but the picture doesn't do it justice you aren't promoting your self well and people may not be able to see how talented you are and the skills you have so i feel the it is important you spend the money to get yourself good equipment when working free lance. However, if you cannot afford to spend money on buying yourself professional lighting or simply cannot carry the equipment as well as your makeup kit to a particular freelance job a clever resource is to use the natural lighting from outside. By placing your client near a window, it not only helps you to see the makeup a lot more clearer while you apply it, it also helps you to get a really good bright final image to upload to your social media.

Working as a freelance makeup artist is isn't always easy to find work and sometimes throughout the year it may be a lot slower. A good resource to use would be to network with other makeup artist and form allies. For example by talking to other makeup artists they may have a big job which requires two artists or maybe they just need someone to help assisting. Although you may not be the lead, it gets you out and gets you through the slower periods in which jobs may be quieter. Another thing freelance artists can do is join call out groups on Facebook. Recently i was added to a Cheshire Hair & Makeup Call Out group via a family friend. This is a group with 40 hair and makeup artists, that each post when they have questions about pricing and jobs, if they need assisting and if they have been asked by a client to preform a service but they are not available they then offer the client to one of us in the group. This is a really good resource as a makeup artist as it means that you always have other people to work with and have people who you can get tips or advice off if you aren't sure on something when you are first starting out as a freelancer.
