Intersecting concepts of Spirituality

Spirituality and religious experiences have always been a bit unclear to me because so many people have various definitions of both terms. In this case, Sacred Harp singing, Gregorian chant and Grateful Dead concert experiences are an example of how music and spirituality have different definitions based on certain people's backgrounds , cultures and traditions. For Sacred Harp singing, anyone can basically join in singing according to the Sacred Harp page however people seem to be able to use it however they see fit. For example, the documentary on Sacred harp singing showed this form of spiritual singing being used in a religious way as people were using this technique to sing songs that worshipped God. This kind of gave me insight on the way Sacred Harp singing can be used and where some people would consider it spiritual; for the fact that it resembles choirs singing songs of worship except they are more in tune and harmonious. For the Grateful Dead concert experiences, I became aware of a different definition of spirituality because the fans of the Grateful Dead called it an experience that they got while attending the concerts seeing so many other people that shared their love of the Grateful Dead and the fact that so many shared the same feelings and interests in one place was kind of spiritual to them Gregorian Chant is similar to Gospel in which they both sing religious songs and take place in church settings. It seemed that Gregorian Chant gave way to many of the musical genres and forms that we have today in Western culture so it was a bit easier for me to understand the definition of spirituality in Gregorian Chant.

This actually relates to the example used on the Sacred Harp singing website as they talked about the origin and initial purpose of Sacred Harp singing which was teaching school children how to sing.

I think this song by Grateful Dead kind of gives a little insight into the feeling fans got when they attended the concerts and/or listened to the music before hand because the intro to me was one of the main components of the performance that created a peaceful, spiritual feeling. The live version definitely conveys a different feeling versus listening to the song on record or at home so this example should show how intense and into the show the crowd was.

This represents the religious and spiritual aspect of Gregorian Chant and just listening to it can kind of remind one of some Western culture songs today. The way that some of the songs incorporate chanting lyrics or harmonizing in the same way, specifically by using a choir, gives insight into the way that Gregorian Chant has influenced Western culture and modern music.
