Assessments give us information and insight on how students are learning and progressing, in order for teachers to create adaptations based on each student's needs. Students should be regularly assessed, collecting systemic data that is uniform and consistent. An important aspect is determining what is being identified/assessed: student's decoding, grammar or understanding.

It's important to compose assessments of oral and biliteracy development in schools because it allows teachers to see if they understand what they are reading and how they are being taught. I really like the survey that students are asked to be because it allows students to share that with the teacher so they are able to adjust their lesson plan to fit students' accommodations. and see where their reading levels are at and ways to help students performance.

It is important to assess our students knowledge on Biliteracy to see where they are on their journey to bilingualism. One of the ways to test students is by reading along with them, and marking down points on the amount of words they are fluent in. Once the words have been recorded it is beneficial for the teachers to go back and see where they are struggling. Another way of assessing the students is by asking them questions at the end of their reading. This one is extremely crucial because it will note how well they undertook the story in the language it was written. Not only does that help create an image in their head about the story but they begin to relate words in different languages.

It is important to assess the oral and biliteracy development of students using a running record by having data of the student and data that I have collected to be aware of the student’s level of biliteracy as well as what I as a teacher need to improve on with my instruction. It is not only for the student to demonstrate their biliteracy but also a good assessment of the teacher’s ability to give instruction and have students understand the instruction. Another tool would be using a take home survey to collect individual insight to work on in the classroom. One insight of using different tools is collecting individual data from the home environment, the students belief of their level of biliteracy, as well an teacher’s insight on the students’ progress.

Something very useful I learned about today that can help me assess biliteracy development and translanguaging is the running record sheet which is an effective way to measure how easy or difficult it was for a student to read a certain piece of text. It allows for the teacher to check the errors the students make, what kind of errors they make, and correct them. This can be done with in English or Spanish, which allows you to assess and monitor the students fluency in either language and compare them. Another tool is the Reading Interest Survey, which allows the teacher to see what the child's interests are when it comes to reading, how often they read, why they read (i.e. because they have to or because they enjoy it), the value they place on reading, and if they believe they are good readers. This can help when modifying instruction as the teacher can include more books or pieces of text that will engage the students based on their reading interest survey.

During this weeks class I learned about IRI's. IRI's are individually administered diagnostics tools that assess a students reading comprehension and reading accuracy. I learned that IRI's have long been considered a valuable means of assessing student reading and that these assessments are comprised of collections of information about students reading through: word lists, fluency tasks, graded reading passages and comprehension rubrics. These collections can help us focus on habits, skills, and thinking processes that our students possess.

One effective way of assessing biliteracy in a student is by using the reading survey to determine a student's relationship with reading in either spanish and english. By acknowledging the way a student feels about bilingual literature, I could then adjust my future lesson plans around the average student's comfort levels. In addition, teachers should consistently assess their student's biliteracy by asking them questions at every moment of every lesson. Teachers should not let their students go along with the lesson plan without asking them questions that relate to the literature. With a rubric, a teacher could take down notes of progression and errors from every student.

Assessments give teachers knowledge they need in order to see where students need further support, what was unclear, and what needs to be retaught. Assessments and data collected in the correct manner helps guide the teacher's instruction and how to teach it. If something did not work, then try a different method. The IRI's a great way to assess students' reading skills by basing it off grade level material. When done in both both languages the teacher will notice what skills are stronger in one language than the other. The other self assessment is helpful because the teacher can get the perspective of how the student feels about their own literacy level in both languages. Teachers can plan according to the responses to make lessons meaningful and engaging for students to develop that growth mindset.

It is important to assess students of oral and biliteracy development because it allows us as teachers to see how much they have progressed and are progressing. One insight I have gained is conducting formative assessments such as a "ticket-out-the-door" is a great way for teachers to see how well students are understanding what they are currently learning. Another example would be collecting data from the students themselves such as with surveys A survey for a reading assessment would allow for teachers to get a better understanding of how students see themselves as readers. A survey followed by a running record sheet would determine a students overall fluency. By having these types of assessments, a teacher can see what skills a student can improve on, such as comprehension, understanding, or fluency.

It is very important to assess oral and biliteracy development because in that way we as teachers can collect data on our student's levels of improvement. It is also important because, for instance, the running record provides an insight, average, and knowledge on our student's results. On the other hand, the Denver Reading Attitude Survey provides a great opportunity for students to self-assess themselves. I found it very helpful because students can see their improvement/error by analyzing their own common attitudes towards reading.

Sophia Gomez- Two important ways of assessing biliteracy development and translanguaging are by providing IRI's and receiving the student's feedback on how their interest level and difficulty levels are on the readings. IRI's are able to assess the reading in each language and it is important to remember to view both assessments through a bilingual viewpoint and use them together. It is also essential to always include material and curriculum based around the students' cultures in order to make them feel connected and represented.

Assessing biliteracy can be done through responsive adaptations. Responsive adaptation assessments give us the ability to see what areas of struggle our students are experiencing. The miscues of struggle that can be found by testing reading comprehension are pronunciation, language, syntactical, visuals, and how students self-correct. Running record sheets also help educators determine the comfortability that students have with reading and their interests. Seeking the areas of interest and struggle helps instructors figure out the areas of need as well as serve as a guide to what will interest and help students improve on their biliteracy.

It can also establish the level of proficiency the student is at with their reading. A teacher can either increase or decrease the level of the book. It can give insight on how a student thinks. It can show if the student needs to improve on their phonemic awareness, cognitive skills, or their understanding within the text. It can help a teacher understand if the student is able to self-correct, recognize the sounds the letters make in both languages and how they are blended together.
