In Chapter One the Germans invade Denmark and occupy the country during World War Two. Lisa and her family are shocked and her brother Stephen is really mad. A radio broadcast is aired saying Denmark has surrendered but that the King and Parliament are still ruling the country and that we should continue life as usual. When Lisa and Stephen head to school they see that life is normal other than trucks filled with German soldiers driving by and German planes flying overhead dropping leaflets and when Lisa picks one up it is written in terrible danish with some norwegian and german thrown in and is says that Denmark is threatened by Britain and France. When Stephen reads it his attitude about the German takeover of changes and he says see Lisa the Germans came to protect us and keep us free from an invasion by England and France. Then he says aren't we lucky to have such good friends. Lisa does not respond and she feels sick inside and can't believe the leaflets the soldiers the vehicles everything. They then run into their cousin Erik on the way and Stephen is not happy because we are all Jewish but Lisa and her family are not terribly religious and Erik's parents let him become confirmed as a Lutheran just one month ago and Stephen thinks that you can't change that your Jewish.

In Chapter Two Lisa cannot get to sleep because she sees German soldiers when she tries. Lisa then starts eavesdropping on her parents and overhears how her father is really angry about the idea of treating german patients. Lisa's dad said he would tell the germans right in their faces that he would not treat them if they got stomach ache from overeating OUR Danish food or a bullet wound because on of OUR people was brave enough to try to do something. If I do treat them they will continue their occupation of OUR country. Lisa then barges in saying FATHER! FATHER! You should continue treating them but don't do the stuff right. Maybe you should say, pretend that the pills are painkillers but are actually sleeping pills or headache pills that will give them stomach aches. Lisa's dad thanks her because she may have stopped him from going crazy.

Lisa is very anxious for the school day to end she overhears Stephen and Jesper arguing and she hears the words resistance, Jewish people, contact, saboteurs and please let me join. Lisa quickly realizes that Stephen wants to join the Danish resistance. However Lisa and Stephen play chicken with the Germans soldiers which is when they are talking and pretend not to notice the German soldiers walk right towards them and see which one will move aside first and if they don't move then stephen will goes right in between them. Lisa and Stephen will not play chicken with the SS or Gestapo.

Lisa really wants to do anything to help the resistance like distributing illegal newspapers. When Lisa and Erik gets to school she sees that the school yard has barbed wire and people in prison uniforms are silently gazing at them and Erik tries to talk to them in Swedish, Norwegian, Italian, French or German. They think they are maybe Polish. They are skinny and then Lisa feels fat and healthy and she then sees that some of them don't have any teeth due to malnutrition and when she is about to give some of her food to the prisoners with teeth a guard sees them and tells them to leave. When Lisa goes to another school she has to go every other day because that's how many kids go to the school now. When Lisa gets home Stephen tells that she is to go to a laundry and ask for Soren Sorensen's clean laundry. Use street cars to get around and to distribute them all over the city until the bag is empty.

Lisa volunteers to pick up the family's laundry from the laundry, she also is secretly going to go to another laundry a few blocks away first to get a laundry that is secretly filled with resistance newspapers. Lisa asks if she could say that every second friday they need help in the shop for a alibi in case her mother check that lisa was working and not doing something else and they agree to say that Lisa works their every second friday. Lisa then hops onto a streetcar and at the next stop two German soldiers hop on then Lisa gets really nervous and just as they reach the next stop she loses her balance and throws up all over the two German soldiers they realize she has illegal resistance newspapers but then twenty people came and stood in between her and the soldiers and one of the people whispers to her "Go! Go!" After that incident Lisa keeps on going onto streetcars and leaving a pile of newspapers on each one until she runs out of newspapers. She then heads to the laundry and returns the bag to the laundry and she is paid ten ore. Lisa then heads to the other laundry and gets the laundry for her family. When she gets home her mother accepts her explanation. When Stefan gets home she tells him everything and when Lisa get to the throwing up all over the German soldiers they both burst out laughing.

Here are the four reasons why lisa fourteenth birthday is so memorable:

1) Lisa has a new white dress made from a parachute

2) Father comes home early in tears because the Germans had barged into the operating room and shot dead seven people

3) The birthday is held at a dance hall even though Lisa is a year younger than the minimum age but they let her in anyways

4) For a little while Lisa completely forgets about the war and for the first time since the Germans invaded Denmark she truly feels at peace

Erik reacts by saying “It's horrible”. Eriks reaction makes Stephen mad because since the beginning Erik has done nothing to fight against the Germans and only now he says it’s horrible is too little too late in Stephen’s mind. Stephen then tries to attack Erik but Lisa hold him back and he gives Erik a chance to escape.
A baby is the sunrise waiting for Lisa at home.
Sussanne is injured in a German bombing and she is orphaned. She is then rushed to the hospital but she will survive.
Sussane motivation is the German bombing that killed her parents.
Lisa means that the Germans are cruel and barbaric and that the resistance bombings and shootings are making them just as bad as the Germans. Lisa is also worried that the resistance will become as bad as the Germans.

Susanne then hides the gun under a loose floorboard and six guns and a submachine gun under the floorboard already. Just then there is a knock at the door and Erik is there saying "the Germans are taking over". Sussanne laughs and then says: "You're just a few years late". Then we find out that the germans have declared martial law, arresting the police, taking over the army, they also dissolved parliament and arrested the Chief Rabbi. They then hear explosions from the harbour and see the danish navy scuttling their ships rather than let the Germans have them. When she looked outside she saw German planes flying overhead.

Lisa and dozens of other Jews have been in the psychiatric ward for two days and now she is worried that they will really turn into psychiatric patients if they are in there for much longer. They find out that the raids started friday night and went on for most of sunday but they captured very few people when they thought they would catch all the Jews celebrating Rosh Hashanah. The Danish resistance was trying to find a way to get Jews out of Denmark to the safety of Sweden. Several nurses inject the younger children. Outside the hospital is a long line of ambulances. Groups of fifteen people pile into each ambulance and an ambulance is leaving every five minutes. Lisa and her family get into the third ambulance. During the drive they are scared that any second a German will shout out and then they would all be caught but that never happens. When they stop for good they all rush out and the ambulance and the driver tells everyone to hide here and that the boats will be here soon. He also told them when they hear three low whistles in a row to go down to the boats. They were also told that the Germans would be patrolling the area on foot and to keep an eye out for them. Lisa is the most she has been in her life. Everyone hides in the bushes and and then they hear footsteps and suddenly two German soldiers burst out of nowhere and point flashlights everywhere but don't spot anyone and move along the coastline. An hour or so later a convoy of German trucks passes by without stopping patrolling the coastline. Just as the convoy finished passing there was a loud scream full of pain and when Lisa sees a friend of her dads with a knife wound in his neck and the dead bodies of his wife and two young children. The eyes of the children were wide open with shock. He said that he and his wife had agreed that if it looked like they would be captured that they would kill themselves and their children. A ambulance arrived to drop off a group of Jews and the injured father was loaded into the ambulance. The boats did not show up and someone said that they should go to a summerhouse owned by members of the Danish resistance.

Stefan tells Lisa that the fisherman who was supposed to take them to Sweden suddenly had demanded a huge amount of money. The resistance was either trying to find the extra money or trying to find a fisherman who would take them for a more reasonable price. Fishing boats are the only type of boat that the Germans would allow onto the water. Stefen pulls Lisa aside and asks if she knows how to use a gun and she said yes. Lisa was told by Stephen to patrol the area with him to watch out for German soldiers. When Lisa told her parents about her decision to stay her father said "Lisa I forbid it." then suddenly Lisa's mom said "Let her decide, David. She's not a little girl anymore. My God I wish she were. But she's old enough to make her own mind." Lisa's father volunteers and then her mom reminds her dad that he is needed so he can inject the children again. Then Lisa's parents ask her about Stefan and Lisa tells them that Stephen is staying also and it is too much for them to have their two children stay behind. Lisa hugs them both and then kisses Sarah and then runs off before her parents could stop her. When she gets outside she sees Stephen and is surprised to see Jesper. Apparently Jesper was their cell's contact. Jesper hands Lisa a pistol with a silencer and he says"we're getting good supplies from England these days." Jesper and Lisa go on patrol and they then hear voices speaking in German and shoot the two Germans soldiers. Minutes later everyone runs to the shore and the fish boat releases two rowboats to pick up the Jews and one of the boats has to make a second trip.

As the fishing boat leaves two huddles under a tree. They are waiting for taxis filled with Jews and another boat. Jesper and Lisa scout around to make sure there are no more patrols. Lisa asks "Why are we using this place as a drop when it is so heavily patrolled." Then Jesper explains that it wasn't so heavily patrolled yesterday and that the Germans are trying to cover as much of the coast as they can. A little while later a tax arrives and five people get out. For the next half an hour a taxi stops every five minutes and four to six people get out. Soon two fishing boats are offshore and the same routine as the first boat occurs. That night Stephen, Jesper and Lisa sleep in the house. When Lisa wakes up she heads to the living room and finds Stephen and Jesper drinking coffee and she heads to the kitchen and brews a whole pot of real coffee which is a treat because after the Germans invaded they have been using chicory. When Lisa takes a sip she feels like she is in heaven. Soon the three of them start talking Stefan says that Lisa is going to Sweden and when she asks about him Stephen he says he is staying. When Jesper tells him that Stephen has to go Stephen pulls out a little white pill that Lisa recognizes as cyanide. Jesper then tells Stephen that if he stays that he will have to use the pill. Now not even Lisa's coffee can go down properly because all she can think about is that little white pill.

They then tell stories about their time as resistance fighters. Jesper told of the time he had shot a Nazi collaborator outside his apartment who was a big industrialist whose actions had led to the deaths of at least twenty Danes. Jesper then went to the man's funeral and as he and some friends were leaving two of them were pulled aside and questioned for twenty minutes. They all have a good lunch and dinner and that night a dairy truck pulled up and fifteen people got out and were hidden in the bushes. The dairy truck driver tells Lisa that there will be only one more drop because it seems two German soldiers were missing in the area. At ten fifty two ambulances pull up and thirty people in total get out. At eleven o'clock a fishing boat is offshore and the same routine happens again except Lisa and Stephen get into the third rowboat. As they are launching from the beach a big beam of light comes from the east and the fishing boat with lights off flee to the west. Lisa, Stephen and five other people row for hours until a huge boat appears and just as Lisa thinks that they are caught she realizes that it is a Swedish destroyer and when they hop aboard the captain says "Welcome to Sweden" and the only words that would sweater would be "Welcome Home."
