CMJ Memo: Midnight Mass: TV Series

Midnight Mass is a new show on Netflix that recently broke the Netflix top 10. It follows the life of a man that went to jail for killing a woman while drunk driving. It carries many heavy themes that it explores like death and religion. It is classified as horror, and uses religion as its main way to frighten its audiences. While the show takes place after the main character, Riley, gets out of prison, it still shows the effects that prison had on him, and has moments where he expresses things about life in prison.

The first scene where Riley explicitly talks about his time is when he is talking to his childhood friend, and she asks him the simple question, “How are you doing.” While this is a normal thing to say to each other, Riley realizes that this is his first time hearing it since he went to prison 4 years ago. In prison “everyday is the same,” so there is no need to ask that question. This relates to a much broader significance about prison and life after prison. When Riley is flung out of prison, this change of everyday life can be hard, and sometimes even unbearable, as we saw with Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption. Riley also struggles with this transition, and while he is warmed by some of the simple things about life outside of prison, he is also lost for most of the time, and it is so unfamiliar that it can be painful. This show is a very realistic show(apart from its fantasy horror) that shows real life people, which makes me realize how much people can change from being in Prison for extended periods of time. Riley feels regret for what he did, and prison did nothing to change this. It just took years of his life away, and made it so that he won't ever be able to be whole again. He is still bondadged by prison, which took away his real freedom and forced him to live the rest of his life feeling out of place in the real world. Do you guys think that it is really possible to be whole again after prison, or will everyone's experience have these same qualities?

Thank you August for bringing up this film. I also stumbled upon this film while bored on Netflix and it was a pleasant surprise. This film was fun to watch and really is a great example of prison in the sense of feeling trapped, but not literally being trapped within physical walls of a prison. The secluded house is his prison, and he eventually tries to escape it in hopes of feeling more freedom. When he escapes, however, he still has a feeling of bondage, which is a common theme throughout many of the things we've analyzed in class and that I've analyzed. During Shawshank, every prisoner that the movie focuses on goes through this same problem. They finally get out of their prison only to realize that their prison has only transferred into real life. Also, the source that I did for my memo has the same theme. Going back into real life where you think you will find freedom, only to find that the prison is still with you, and will probably never leave. It also might come back to bite you, which happens at the end of Creep if I remember correctly. If you look around, you will find this theme in many other forms of media because it can be depicted in many different ways.

It is the cumulation of my favorite ideas and aspects of the class coming into one essay. This essay was the inspiration for my oral presentation as well and it was very important in order for the panopticon to become my favorite topic.
