It is a system based on everything from artwork to science, litterature, plays and music, later movies and cartoons and so on. Part of the European Orientalism has been the creation of an "Other", an "exotic Easterner". This "O

Actually, the name "Greece" itself sort of comes from what you could call a Roman exotification of the Hellenistic city-states, the name "Graecia" is the Roman name for one specific Greek city on the East coast of the Italian Peninsula, and "Graecia" came to be a Roman description of ALL city states "like it".

It has created a notion of us/them, which today has facilitated a fear of the unknown and for some people a need to reject it, as well as an either direct or indirect feeling of superiority towards the unfamiliar culture, just because it is different from the west.

We need to interpret the past cultures with an open-mind and without any prejudice or Eurocentric feelings of superiority. Also, we need to be able to work in these areas alongside the local people - it is their history and their material culture, and we need to treat it with respect
