Dette ledde til en blodig borgerkrig, som varte fra 1917-1922.  Borgerkrigen var mellom de røde (kommunistene) og de hvite (konservative). De røde var ledet av Vladimir Lenin. De hvite derimot hadde ingen spesiell leder, noe som  gjorde dem militært sett svakere.

The permanent revolution is Leon Trotsky's idea of the future of communism. The idea consisted of that when a communist revolution is taking place the old order in the country will be overthrown to advantage of the working class and overthrow the old social structure.
