- give a positive energy to mentees so that they would not be judged
- create warm environment & build rapport
e.g. when mentee is retaliating/getting angry, should pull him aside and ask questions about why he is like that
- we as mentors can lead as examples, can become part of their peer support system
e.g. lowering our expectations so as to level to mentees' expectations, start small and further expand
