The design problem or opportunity that has been given to us is to create a more innovative, fun, and educational toy than the ones that are available to the EY1-2 students in KIS.

Also, Piaget's theory of development suggests that kids in the first stage of development, that are 0-4 years old, are usually starting to explore their imagination (such as imagining that an ordinary broom is a 'magic flying broom') and improving their sensory and motor skills such as hand-eye coordination. Also, kids enjoy playing with things that make them feel more grown up (such as a cash register).

Furthermore, we have to create an educational toy that follows all the safety guidelines and doesn't hurt the kids (such as no sharp edges), be appropriate for the audience (which in this case are the kids, so we would need to create something that is not too complicated for them to understand), and help then develop their motor and sensory skills (which this article suggests are a very important part of a toddler's development) while enjoying their time with the toy (which we can do by making the toy make noises or be something that the kids have to 'put together').

One of the underlying issues in this solution is the very short attention span of our audience since they might get easily bored of the toy. Also, this article from babycenter suggests that the average attention span of a 4 year old is only five to ten minutes. This short attention span is an issue because we have to really think about what the kids will like and be interested in since younger kids are also easily distracted by the world around them and might start exploring the room instead of playing with the educational toy. A solution for this issue could be using bright colors and loud, clear noises to draw their attention to the toy.

Another one of the underlying issues in this solution is the physical safety of the kid that would be playing with the toy. Adding on, this article suggests that approximately 217,000 children are treated at hospital emergency rooms for toy-related injuries and a lot of those injuries were caused by things such as choking (since children under the age of three have tendency to put everything in their mouths) and suffocation. Also, the kid playing with the toy could cut him/herself if there are any sharp or unclean edges on the toy. A solution to the issue would be carefully inspecting each toy that we create and making sure that there is nothing sharp on the toy that the kid can hurt him/herself with before presenting them to the kids.

The problem is to create an innovative fun learning toy, so that the kids could develop some basic skills and continue to develop into a fully grown adult.

We will be creating an educational toy for children ages 4-5 to help them improve because According to Piaget’s theory Children in ages 4 are in the stage of Pre-operational, they are likely to imagine things like pretending a broom is a horse. So that means that we should create a toy to improve their coordination or other skills while also giving them a chance to be imaginative.

For the toy to be suitable and effective for the children it must follow some of the criteria’s for instance, uses different types of material, using bright noticeable colours, and also suitable for their development needs, it needs to be safe and also engaging to be a good educational toy for kids.

Children likes toys like for example Fingerlings, the underlying problem is to make these educational and amazing toys safe, fun and engaging. Some problems is that kids/children under 5 years old often suffer from choking. According to https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100226212559.htm the majority of choking incident among children are associated with food and small toys. Another issue is that kids this age aren’t fully mature yet, and they wouldn’t be able to think that complicated so the product must be simple and easy to play with and understand.

Because of Piaget theory, the best educational toy would be something easy and understandable, it would be able to develop some basic skills for the children, but also let them have some imagination and create something of their own.

Some examples
This toy down below is a very good example of a decent educational toy. This has many different varieties of bright colors which would attract children's attention. Because this comes with just shapes of triangles, square, pentagons children could use their imagination to create many different shapes and patterns as they please. Because this toy is magnetic, it is easily able to pull apart, and easily put together so that even small kids are able to play. The size of this playset is also not too big and not too small, if it's too small little kids might choke on it. But it isn't too big for the kids to hold onto it with ease. And kids this age according to piaget's theory love to imagine, you maybe when they created the shape and style they want, they would imagine it's real, like maybe a shape like down below, little kids could imagine it being a dinosaur or duck or many other things.

CNN suggests that over 3 million children were treated in emergency departments for a toy-related injury in 2011 and a little over half of the injured are young children under the age of six. This means that if we are making an educational toy then we have to do multiple test to make sure that it is very safe for kids to play with and that there would be no chances of injuries because of the toy. Another underlying issue would be the attention span of the children. statistics show that children at the age of 3 can concentrate on an interesting activity for 3-8 minutes.4 year olds can spend 5-15 minutes depending on how interesting and different the activity is. 5 year olds can also concentrate for 10-15.

Introduce and describe the problem
The design problem that I will be creating a design is to create an educational toy. Our target audience is children who're age levels are around 2-7 years old. Something important I should remember whilst creating the toy is that it shouldn't be too small so that children won't put it in their mouths and choke. Children around this age may tend to put things in their mouths so we should try to avoid this from happening. The toy should have nice aesthetics that will attract our target audience and parents because the parents are the one who decides what toys they will purchase for their children. The toy should be self-explanatory so that children will be able to understand the function of the toy. What we are teaching the kids should be simple so that is easy for these kids to gain knowledge from. Since our target audience is ages 2-7 we should choose a topic that is interesting for kids. Kids this age usually start to develope their 5 senses and enjoy pretend play which improves their imagination and creativity so we should keep that in mind. As well as making a toy that is interesting to kids it would be helpful if we made the toy related to units they've learned or are learning at school. We should think about the materials we will use to create our toy. It would be more convenient for us to create something using the 3D printer rather sewing something. We can try to incorporate different materials so that the children can use their sense of touch whilst playing. Things we must keep in mind whilst creating the toy include:
- Aesthetics
-Function
-Target Audience
- Size
-Safetey
- What we are trying to teach

Analyse and summerise the underlying issues
For the toy that we are designing, I think that we should try to provide the kids with a fun and memorable learning experience. I believe that in order to do this we need to appeal to the children's aesthetics as well as subtlely making sure they learn something after playing. Educational toys that I think are really interesting include legos and Project Mc2 toys. Legos are toys that enhance children's imagination and coordination. I would like to talk about my expirience when playing with legos at an early age. As a kid I didn't play much with lego but as I grew up I started playing lego in Grade 2-3. My lego's weren't themed which allowed me to be very creative on what I would make. My best friend and I created our own world using legos and created our own characters. When we didn't have any homework we would play with legos together. I feel that when I played with legos as a kid it really helped me up until today because I got to be very creative whether creating buildings and creating characters. One day I was given a lego set where you had to follow the instructions to create it and I beleive this helped me with my ability to follow insturctions and gave me a sense of accomplishment after completing it. Lego also created a movie that would encourage kids to create their own lego creations and to be creative whilst doing so. After watching the movie it encouraged me to be more creative not only whilst building with legos but also when creating art or writing stories. Another educational toy I found really interesting is Project Mc2 dolls. These toys are based on a TV series called Project Mc2 on Netflix. This particular TV show is about teenage spies that are the smartest girl in school. Each girl is smart in their own aspect such as technology, inventing, culinary chemistry, botany, or art. This TV show inspired me and many other friends to try harder in academics and research about topics we were intrested about outside of class so that we could gain the same amount of knowledge as the characters in the tv show. Project Mc2 later made toys based on characters from the tv shows or things that they had. The dolls they made would come with an expiriment for kids based on S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). The expiriments would be based on something the character made in the show or based on their passion. Expiriments included building a terrarium, making a mini volcano, making a lava lamp, making your own paint, making your own robot, and more. The toys that they created would also talk about the science behind how that toy would work. Toys they made included a lying detector, a portable lab kit, spy bag, night vision goggles, and more. What we know about these kind of educational toys is that they can either be contstuctive toys at which allow kids to be creative a build their own characters and structures and others which are based on films or books but are still educational.

Present a way forward to attempt a solution giving an example article and example solution
Our target audience is Grade 1 students so we need to keep in mind the Aesthetics, Function, Target Audience, Size, Safety, and what we are trying to teach using the toy. When we go visit the children we should look at the types of toys children are attracted to whether based on gender or personal interest or even cultural backgrounds. We should see which toys are the most popular for the children and try to see what these toys have in common and to try to apply these themes to our toys. We also need to focus on function making sure that our toys are easy to play with and have simple functions that a Grade 1 can understand. We also need to keep in mind how big the toys will be and we can look at the toys they play with and see the average sizes of the toys and if the sizes affect the popularity of the toy. Something really important is safety. Since the kids aren’t too young hopefully they won’t try to swallow the toys when they play with it. We need to make sure the toys don’t have any sharp edges that could hurt the kids or any problems similar to that. Finally we need to decide what skills or topics we are trying to teach the kids about whether it’s developing creativity or learning something science related. I should keep these aspects in mind whilst design and creating my toy.

There would be many issues that would be eventually faced over the process of design and creating the product. Another issue is finding the right spot between simplistic and complicated (Finding the right spot, also makes way for problems such as plagiarism). When a toymaker creates toys for 11+ year old kids, their brains are much more developed and they are smarter than 4-6 year olds, so if the toymaker was to gift an 11+ year old kid a complicated toy such as a Transformer as the kid won't have much problem playing with the toy. However, if the toy was given to a 4-6 year old kid, it would be too obscure to them. So the toy should be a lot more simple and easier to understand. But if it's too simple like building blocks (Not Lego), then the kids would be too bored.

Small kids might get bored or distracted very easily. To design a educational toy for kid requires good aesthetics and something that kids would enjoy playing with The educational toy should teach the kids knowledge for their level so not something to easy or not to hard. So we need to figure out what 4 year old kids are learning about and what they are already comfortable with. Every educational toy should be safe to play with and not dangerous. If the toys look like food kids especially around 4 years old would most likely try to consume it. This can cause the kid to die from choking. According to my research kids around 4-5 years old love their food. If we are designing a toy that is based on the kids likes and dislikes it might convince the kid to try and eat it.

A solution to this problem is Piaget’s theory of Cognitive Development. The theory states, “ intelligence is something that grows and develops through a series of stages. Older children do not just think more quickly than younger children” (Piaget). The theory consists of 4 stages, which describes the thought growth and process of children in this age group. I can use this theory to find the recommended age-group for my toy. For example, if I wanted to know which age-group would enjoy this toy the most, I wouldn’t be able to conclude correctly. But using Piaget’s theory, this toy is most likely enjoyed by the The Concrete Operational Stage (7-11 years) because the theory suggests that: kids in this age-group start to think more logical, sophisticated, and organized, which is great for this toy because they’ll understand that they’re supposed to build a house following a set of instructions instead of consuming it or using it to hit others.

We are trying to make a toy that is suitable, engaging, safe, and one that can actually be manufactured. The target audience is kids that are about 4 years old, at this age, they are in a state called the pre-operational state, this means they have some sort of logic and memory. They are able to think about an object without the object being there. This toy also has to be a toy that is educational meaning it must be a little challenging, but at the same time, it has to be fun and enjoyable.

These kids are also in a stage where they want to touch and play with things, meaning this toy must be a physical toy that they can interact with, it can not only be fun for them but also it has to teach them and develop something within them for example, legos, legos help kids through natural imagination which then can become a lego figure that they have made on their own, this makes them less reliant and teaches them the basic materials to complete a certain task.An example of a toy that has had many successes throughout present years is again LEGO, LEGO is a good example because of how well it educates kids about many things. It educates them about how to use their imagination, and how to transform their thoughts into real objects. This article suggests that it also teaches them at a young age about renewable energy, in the article it talks about how they keep in mind how many legos they have and how many they would need for something they want to make. These kids also have a very short attention span, as a result, we must make this product eye-catching and attractive, this takes specific designing to figure out what the children's with ages 4 favorite themes are, whether it is aliens, video games, space, and others. This means you will have to adapt to the design of the children's toys. Making the toy safe is also difficult, it has to be big enough for them not to shove down their throat, this is especially hard because it might clash with your design.

I'm considering creating a toy that teaches the child about the importance of protecting the environment. Due to my research I realized that the biggest and most common problem with toys is that they are most of the time made out of plastic with a very short life-span meaning they are thrown away right after they have been bought. For example, this article talks about this problem. Furthermore, the fact that most toys are made out of plastic, might put the children in the mindset that using plastic is okay. This is because the children might connect their happy memories of playing with toys with plastic so they might think that it's okay to use that much plastic.
