The Golden Age of Cruising, which started from the 1920s to the 1960s marked the period of when cruises became more and more accessible to the public. Before this time, cruising was massivley a luxury holiday for the wealthier people. However, during this time, there was advancements in shipbuilding and a growing demand for leisure travel which made cruising more affordable and appealing to a larger group of people. The introduction of larger, more luxurious ships such as the Queen Mary and the Ile de France allowed the development of a new type of travel experience that combined adventure with comfort. The growth of the middle class and the spread of air travel also played a role in making cruises an easier option for more people. By the 1950s and 1960s, cruising became a popular holiday choice, with many destinations around the world becoming accessible to tourists from various backgrounds. This period started the modern cruise industry, as cruise lines increasingly marketed their ships as floating resorts offering entertainment, dining, and exotic destinations for an emerging mass market.

In 2008, the German travel giant TUI Group entered the cruise business by launching their own brand named TUI cruises, they were in partnership with Royal Caribbean Cruises. Their first ship was the MS Mein Schiff 1 which was debuted in 2009. The launch was a very big moment, as TUI was already a well-established travel agency and operator, but they had never previously operated their own cruise line. TUI Cruises quickly became known for their focus on a more relaxed, all-inclusive cruising experience which was aimed at the German-speaking market, combining luxury with a casual, contemporary style. The success of this move helped the company expand their fleet better their place as a key player in the European cruise market.

One of the biggest advancements in the cruise industry is the integration of smart ship technology. 1. Modern cruise ships are now equipped with cutting-edge digital systems that streamline everything from passenger services to operational efficiency. 2. Many ships now feature Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which allows better connectivity and personalized experiences. For example RFID-enabled wristbands allow passengers to access their cabins easily , make onboard purchases and board the ship without a traditional key card. 3. They have introduced AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants onboard which are used to help passengers with everything from dining reservations to excursion bookings this helps create a seamless and more interactive experience. 4. There is voice activated technology in cabins which allows passengers to control lighting, temperature, and entertainment with simple commands. This technology does not only improve convenience but also contributes to a more personalised and modern experience for the cruise travellers.

The outbreak of WW1 in 1914 brought global travel to a standstill, including the cruise industry. Transport routes including those used by cruise ships were either disrupted or repurposed for military purposes. Many of the luxury liners and cruise ships were requisitioned by governments to serve as troops transports or hospital ships. The ships that were not directly involved in the War had to cease their operations due to the lack of passengers, fuel shortages and the general disruption of international travel. The war created widespread uncertainty and a reduction in disposable income which meant that fewer people were able to afford luxury travel. After the war had ended cruising gradually became popular again. However many cruise lines had to re establish routes and rebuild their fleets and it took a few years for the industry to regain its pre war levels of growth.

The second World War caused even more severe disruptions that WW1. Just like WW1 most of the ships were requisioned by governments for military purposes including troop transport and hospital ships. The major cruise lines such as Cunard Line and HAPAG saw their ships either repurposed or destroyed during the war. Many luxury liners were either sunk or damaged by air raids and submarines. For example the RMS queen mary one of Cunards flagships was converted into a troop transport and RMS Laconia was sunk by a German U boat. During WW2 civilian travel became nearly impossible as many ports were either closed or became war zones and resources like fuel were rationed which made it even harder to maintain any cruise operations. After WW2 there was a big resurgence in demand for leisure travel as people sought to recover from the hardships of the war. This time remarked the beginning of the modern cruise industry as luxury cruises restarted their operations and began offering pleasure cruises to grow the middle class that were eager for new travel experiences.

COVID-19 Pandemic (2020-2022)

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought the entire cruise industry to a temporary halt. As the virus spread globally governments put strict lockdowns and border closures in place which severely restricted travel. In March 2020 many of the biggest cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise line announced the suspension of operations at first for only a few weeks but later extending for months. The US issued a No Sail Order which lasted from March 2020 until October 2020 which prevented cruise ships from operating in the US waters. Early in the Pandemic cruise ships became known for outbreaks of COVID19 on board with the ships like the Grand princess making headlines after thousands of passengers and crew members tested positive for the virus. The Cruise line industry faced many financial strains with some taking out large loans or even selling assets to stay afloat. By mid 2021 cruises began to slowly restart in selected areas, particularly in places such as the Caribbean and Europe as vaccinations became more international and the industry adapted to the new safety rules. However many cruise lines faced challenges as they had changes in customer behaviour who were uncertain about future breakouts and shifts in demand. It took many years before the industry returned to pre pandemic levels of operations.

The RMS Titanic was a luxury British passenger liner which sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912. The ship was deemed unsinkable due to its advanced engineering and design, it had insufficient lifeboats for the number of passengers on board. There was more than 1,500 people perished in the tragedy. The titanic was travelling at a high speed despite having warnings about icebergs from other ships. After this tragedy there was an impact on safety policies such as new maritime safety standards, it became mandatory for ships t carry enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew. It led to better systems for iceberg detections and warnings as well as international efforts to ensure ships travelled at safer speeds in icy waters. It also highlighted the need for more in dept crew training in emergency procedures and lifeboat drills. Regulations were made to ensure that all passengers were made aware of safety procedures.

On January 13, 2012 the Costa Concordia which was an Italian cruise ship operated by Costa cruises struck a rock off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy, resulting in the ship capsizing. There was 4,229 passengers on board and 32 were killed in this incident. This disaster happened after the ships captain changed panned course to perform a sail by for passengers. Captain Francesco Schettino was found to have made critical errors including steering the ship too close to the shore, abandoning ship prematurely and failing to properly manage evacuation. His actions were later seen to and he was convicted of manslaughter. In regards to this there was some policy changes such as stricter captain accountablity and conduct, enhanced evacuation drills and procedures, improved safety managment system for example bridge monitoring and better passenger notification systems.
