    1. The need for slaves rose due to the rise in the market for sugarcane
  • African tribes began warring with each other in an attempt to capture potential slaves to trade for European goods

      1. They used natives as laborers for a while to do their work for them
      2. Spanish suppressed native religions
      3. Pueblo revolt was brutally put down after the Pueblo rose up after unrest
      4. Some Spaniards had children with the natives and mixed raced people (mestizos) were born
    2. The Dutch
      1. Traded furs in general, not sure if related specifically to natives
    3. The French
      1. The French treated the natives pretty well
      2. Some traders married native women and had children with them
      3. Became part of their society kind of

      5. French had many allies with natives
      6. Allied with natives like the Algonquins
      7. Fought with enemies of their native allies
    4. The English
      1. The English saw the natives as savages as they were different in their culture, language, religion, etc.
      2. Used this to justify harsh treatment of them
      3. Tried to keep societies separate
    5. In general
      1. Some European nations got along with natives (the French mainly)
      2. Some Europeans treated them like savages (the English a lot and some Spanish)
      3. Some Europeans also married the natives (a bit of all societies but more French and Spanish)
