The cost of making and developing the TRIDENT submarine is huge. The UK spent up to £40 billion on this, it is possible that the TRIDENT will not even be used at it will be decommissioned (out of use) in the late 2020s. Therefore that will have been a waste of £40 billion which could have been spent on necessary things like the healthcare system and improving the NHS.

 However the TRIDENT creates jobs for the population.
Creates a safer Britain and therefore companies might want to come into our county which would create new jobs.
 If the TRIDENT missile does manage to prevent a nuclear threat, it will eliminate catastrophic damage to the UK. This damage will have an enormous effect on the UK's financial situation. Nuclear weapons and missiles can damage the environment and makes areas dangerous, for example, radiation can make an area uninhabitable until it clears over a long period of time.

It could also change people's attitude towards the environment and cause people to not want this defence system.

Also, the silent submarine would still be able to launch a catastrophic retaliatory strike on the aggressor, a concept known as mutually assured destruction, this could cause a massive damage to the environment and affect climate change.

There is also the fear that damage from the warheads could cause another Hiroshima-like incident where the system accidentally targets innocents and destroys the surrounding environment and ruins a large area forever or for a very long duration of time.

Great advances in technology has been made under the development of trident.
Trident II D-5 missiles are much more sophisticated than their predecessor, with factors such as the missiles being made of graphite epoxy, being much lighter than any other version.

Trident could actually save the environment if it manages to intercept any missiles or nuclear warheads mid-air so that neither country is harmed, therefore, not affecting the environment we live in.

Shouldn't be used to gain votes.
Public might be misinformed.
The prime minister has the ability to detonate the missile and would do so on the basis that the majority of Britain are for it and therefore the prime minister would gain votes.
