She was one of four siblings, but was her father's favorite child. At he age of six, Kahlo contracted polio which caused one of her leg to grow thinner than the other. To cover this up, she would always wear long skirts. Her father who also suffered from illnesses taught Frida art. (I know, I am sad as well that she was a communist...) After they traveled to  New York and Detroit, where Rivera would do several more paintings. However Kahlo was disgusted by capitalism and disliked the social groups she was in. Frida mostly focused on her painting while living in USA. But overall she was miserble there. 

The couple returned to Mexico in 1934 when Rivera was fired as an artist after making an ugly mural of Rockefeller. She needed multiple skin grafts and surgeries, and went to San Francisco for her treatment. She kept painting throughout this time, several of her paintings becoming quite popular. At the very end of her life, it went so far as Frida needed her leg amputated.
