- In agricultural communities, both men and women work in the fields
- It is estimated that women do up to 80% of the work in rural areas : in addition to work in the fields, they take care of the children, cook, keep a vegetable garden, fetch water, and bringing the food to the market to sell
- majority of men leave their rural communities and move to the city in search of paying jobs, while this sometimes brings in more income in the family, it also increases the women's workload
- In urban areas, women are more likely to take jobs outside the home ; 40% of the urban workforce is female

Family Unit :
- traditionally a man builds a separate hut for each of his wives, where she will live with her children, and a hut separate for himself
- In a family with one wife, the parents often live together with girls and younger boys, while the older boys sometimes have smaller houses close by
- It is common for several generations to live together under the same roof

The mineral sector is so far not a significant contributor to the country’s economy. However, the country is gearing up to move from an agriculture and tourism based-economy to one that is based on mineral resources. Most of the mines (gemstones, diatomite, fluorspar, and soda ash mines) are privately owned.  

Kenya’s major exports to the world include : tea, coffee, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, dairy products, honey, cut flowers, handcrafts, tobacco, plastics, rubber, raw hide and skins, paper and paper board, woven textile products, petroleum products, cement, pyrethrum extracts, spices, sisal,medicaments, livestock, processed foods, textiles and apparels, aluminum, iron & steel, limestone, soda ash, fluorspar, stones, and tourism

The destinations of Kenya's exports includes the East African Community (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi), Pakistan, Egypt, UK, the European Union, United States of America, Middle East and Asia

Kenya is the lead exporter of flowers to the European Union with a market share of over 35%. It is also the principal importer of Kenya fresh produce (fresh fruits and vegetables)
