Ketamine is an anesthetic and was first developed as a replacement to another anesthetic, PCP. It is usually used before surgery for kids or animals because it has hypnotic, analgesic, amnesic properties. It is a clear liquid when used medically, but when used on the street is a fine white power similar to salt or tiny glass shards.

When ketamine was first developed it was used primarily for medical use but then they began to use it as a battlefield drug particularly in the Vietnam war. During the time this drug was realesed law enforcement officers were trying to contain the spread of other drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other traffic drugs but at this time there were no laws on ketamine so the street use of it skyrocketed.

Ketamine makes you sleep, relieves pain and can cause short term memory loss on the person that took the drug. When using the drug there are also hallucogens that can occur when users are in the "emergent state" or when they are regaining consiusness from use of the drug. Many people report seeing dead family members or religious figures during this time. It was a very powerful hallucogen and many people used it for the thrill or after misusing other drugs that were harder to get.

Recently, ketamine has become an FDA approved antidepressant and is now being sold as one in many places. They tested its effectiveness in mouse models whose brain patterns when on ketamine confirm these results. Ketamine is illegal now to be used as a recreational drug, doing other drugs may lead to an abuse of ketamine. Ketamine is not a very popular drug amongst high school students but it is considered a club drug so it would not be difficult to attain for students. While there can be some benefits to taking ketamine for your mental health it is a very powerful drug that can affect your health in many bad ways.
