I believe in the value of humility, of being self-aware and knowing my place, of understanding and acknowledging how I am perceived as a straight white man and the privileges that come along with that identity. I have experienced what frugality as a solidly middle class white person looks like, but from a place of choice rather than a place of desperate necessity, and this has shaped the way that I value (or don’t value) material things. I choose to do the work that I do to ensure that I am using my privilege and my beliefs to work alongside communities and people in a sense of shared humanity, of values, and of the important of being people together.

In the skin I am in I am a white, straight, cis woman. In every room I enter I come bearing the centuries of privilege my whiteness affords me. As a child I was never taught the meaning of this privilege or what I was meant to do with it, so I ignored it in large part until I moved to DC and was forced to grapple with it more intentionally.

Through my work as an educator I began to see how deeply educational inequity impacted even the youngest of children and was continually inspired by their creativity, brilliance and resilience. I wanted to make it my life’s work to help them discover the power of their own words and give them the resources needed to spread their ideas far and wide.

I am committed to creating paths for all students to live their life of choice. Specifically, I choose to focus my energy to creating paths for marginalized students who I do not share identities with.

I am a white, straight woman. I am a mom and wife to a white man. We experience financial wellbeing and security. I know that these facets of my identity will always prevent me from the full perspective taking needed to understand the wants, needs, desires, joys, and challenges experienced by the students I've committed to.

And therefore, it's my responsibility to always seek to learn and center the voices of those I serve in my work. I must constantly work to disconfirm my assumptions and beliefs.
