I want to play my role in making the world a better place – I picked a major that played to my strengths (finance) and picked an organization with a mission I believed in to put my skill to use. 

Why did you choose to do the work you do? What is your purpose/ mission statement (what do you promise)?   

For my specific job – to keep the trains running in an organization to allow our programs team to affect change in the community (ensuring children in DC and PR thrive) AND confront and remove inequities within the organization to allow our colleagues of color to thrive 

What is your educational equity stance?  

All children want to learn, and all children deserve the same opportunities to education

What are the priorities and non-negotiables you take into every room, meeting, interaction & situation – consciously or unconsciously?

In every room I enter I come bearing the centuries of privilege my whiteness affords me. As a child I was never taught the meaning of this privilege or what I was meant to do with it, so I ignored it in large part until I moved to DC and was forced to grapple with it more intentionally. 

Through my work as an educator I began to see how deeply educational inequity impacted even the youngest of children and was continually inspired by their creativity, brilliance and resilience. I wanted to make it my life’s work to help them discover the power of their own words and give them the resources needed to spread their ideas far and wide.

I am a white, straight woman. I am a mom and wife to a white man. We experience financial wellbeing and security. I know that these facets of my identity will always prevent me from the full perspective taking needed to understand the wants, needs, desires, joys, and challenges experienced by the students I've committed to. 
And therefore, it's my responsibility to always seek to learn and center the voices of those I serve in my work. I must constantly work to disconfirm my assumptions and beliefs.

As a white woman and someone who has experienced abuse, my stance is love is the opposite of fear, that I enter into this work with love, AND I acknowledge that I protect myself through some traditional white supremacy culture – stiff, careful, conflict averse

• I believe it is my responsibility to leave the world better than I found it. In my adult years, this has evolved to bettering the world specifically for Black and Brown communities who are sidelined from access and opportunity. In the last 5 years, this has evolved to fighting for equity in public education in the DC area.
• I choose to do this work because I consider it critical and urgent. It almost doesn’t feel like a choice. 
• I promise to be unapologetic, passionate, stumble-y, and humble.

I am a young white woman and I bring with me the experiences of being respected and listened to in most rooms I walk into. I am some one who acts confidently as a result of progressing through systems and structures that help me advance and are outside my control, both personally and professionally. I am someone for which life just works for them. I am part of the dominant race, speak the dominant language, a citizen of a dominant country, and have experienced benefits of class and education. 

 

My mission is people focused and using my privilege and life experiences …. (still working on this)
