The behaviorist theory is based on a child's interaction with something. The behaviorist theory uses "stimulus, response and reinforcement as the basic elements of learning"(60, Pererorgy). The main idea is that if the child touches a ball then he will associate ball with a small spherical object and then start to use the word ball because he is watching his parents say the word ball. Finally, he will recieve praise for calling the object by its name and reinforcement of the word will stick with the child.

This theory takes the nature of the Innatist theory and the nurture of the Behaviorist theory and rolls them together. The idea is that the caretaker is generally responsible for how the child adjusts language to fit meanings and understanding of words while the child already has a concrete understanding of rules and roles for words and sentence structure. The child has the ability to understanding words with multiple meaning through asking and the caretaker giving a thorough response. This also incorporates scaffolding for young children to broaden their vocabulary and sentence length for more detail.

This theory is to develop second language learners by primary method of "skills and drills." This is the idea that if a learner is given a set of tapes, as an example, then they will first hear the second language words and then repeat them out loud. Followed by writing them down and putting them in proper structure. Errors were supposed to be corrected immediately to avoid bad habits and imitation and reinforcement are key.

The creative constructionists theory was a series of questions asked to EL's through colored cartoon images. The questions were asked in such a way that it would produce an answer of a certain grammatical structure. The responses were studied and it was concluded that EL's responded in the same way as a first language learner(of English) rather than mistakes that might have been made due to their native tongue. This gave way to refute the idea that mistakes made by second language learners will be predictable based on their native tongue.
