America has done what Kevin Starr, a California State Librarian in the documentary A Forgotten Injustice, has stated we should avoid, “becoming slaves to the past.” The same documentary also brings up an immensely insightful statement regarding the name of the documentary itself: “As we started this investigation in 2001, it became pretty clear soon after, that the United States may be entering, or already has entered, another phase of its history where it’s targeting a certain segment of its society on reasons that are more grounded in racial bigotry than any other explanation; be it national security or economic distress. And it’s one that really kept driving us to fully expose what occurred in the 1930’s so that we could look at what’s going on in the United States today to make sure that what we as a society are doing to some within our society, to be honest: Is it grounded in national security? Or is it grounded in racial or religious bigotry?” He then makes the connection: “It’s why time and time again that a forgotten injustice condemns us to repeat it again.” (A Forgotten Injustice 00:04:32 - 00:05:40).This is what’s happened time and time again with every person of color in America. The Chinese Americans were denied citizenship and bottlenecked, and eventually restricted from immigrating to the United States. The same deal with the Japanese Americans who were also denied citizenship and forced into internment camps for ambiguous reasons regarding national security. Mexican Americans suffered the same fate, being denied citizenship and returned to their “country of origin” with the audacity for the United States government to claim these people were returning “willingly” when they were given death threats in person and sent onto vehicles at gunpoint to be taken away.

Although gone about in different ways, Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican Americans all faced deportation, and even worse, faced a removal of their citizenship for those who stayed. All these forgotten injustices weave together throughout America’s history, sharing some of the ugliest sides of prejudice. George Floyd’s death was no accident, nor was it the fault of one officer within the police force. It’s a systemic behavior that plagues every facet of law enforcement in this country. This kind of racial discrimination and inhuman violence towards people of color is such a big component of the United States that there is a whole sect of law enforcement named I.C.E., Immigration and Customs Enforcement, that specifically targets immigrants and abuses their basic human rights while at the same time denies them citizenship and passage. The numerous protests demanding justice for George Floyd all over the country have only been met with violent actions from the police wearing full riot gear and armed to the teeth. Rubber bullets flying into the crowd, tear gas, random assaults on people in crowds, planted objects to instigate rioting, undercover officers within protest crowds, undercover officers driving around and breaking every store window they come across, and the most extreme action of violence, running over protestors with a police vehicle. All recorded on video, and all police departments who participated in such acts free of scrutiny from the justice system. The killer of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was free from jail after someone paid his 1 million dollar bond on Wednesday ,October 7 with no trial until next year. George Floyd was not only stripped of his basic human rights when assaulted by Derek Chauvin, he was also stripped of his life.
