I value my family a lot and this short story has a lot to do with family. It influenced me by showing that sometimes people make mistakes but your family will always forgive you even if you have to make a gesture. Also, sometimes a conflict can affect the entire family.

The story was written in the perspective of Maya, this technique helped me connect with her thoughts and that helped me understand more about her situations. Also, both her brother and her had a special bond and were always there for each other. The story helped me understand more about the culture in the story and the importance of family to her.

The non-fiction piece "The Lost and Found Cat' had the most influence on me as a reader. I have two cats, and cats are one of my favorite animals, so I really connected to the family's love for their cat. It made me love my cats even more because I couldn't imagine losing them like that family did. Also, it was non-fiction, so I allowed myself to be influenced by it because I knew that the information being presented was reliable. In fiction, the author can make up anything they want, so it may not be reliable, therefore I don't allow myself to be influenced by it as much.

I was really able to see how important family is.

The fiction story "My Favorite Chaperone" influenced me the most. The bond between the siblings really made me think about how in modern families, you don't really have the "perfect" siblings anymore. But in the story the kids were close, more close than me and my brothers. The bond between Maya and her brother is just great. Her brother was able to give up his time for his sister, and Maya tricked their father for less punishment on her brother. My brothers would NOT do the same.

Also growing up it was really hard to maintain my hair. So when my dad had to do it, it could be challenging for him since he doesn't have hair like me. Also when I had to learn to do my hair on my own it was hard and I got frustrated. I think the short film shows lots of people about that culture and it shows people to be proud of their natural hair. Lastly, at the end of the story I thought it was really nice when the family reunited together.

"The Latecomer" had the most influence on me as a reader. This influenced me through the emotional context it was told in, because this piece is nonfiction, which conventionally isn't told through emotional context, so this caught my interest and motivated me to keep reading. An example from the text that is told through emotional context is "I remember thinking that the pain was teasing me but realizing soon that it wasn’t a joke...My mom and dad rushed to my side, and I remember
seeing myself twisting and turning, all out of color and out
of breath, but still moving with nervous life." In this passage, the text causes us to feel empathy for the subject of the memoir, which is why it caught my interest.

"My Favorite Chaperone" probably had the most influence on me as a reader. I was able to relate to Maya's experiences and to understand her conflict. Her family's beliefs and values were different from those she was experiencing at school. She had trouble trying to negotiate how to please her parents but to also fit in at school and get the most out of her school experience.
