As far as I know, there is no actual scientific evidence that the earth is flat, it's more just intuitive thought. There's been studies and there's lots of data on climate change science.

Their claim is based on anecdotal evidence and it is more of a denial of things we do not understand. Flat Earth is not valid because we have proof and have sent spaceships into orbit etc. Global warming is a more complex issue and the predictions are not as accurate as they could be. While we cannot make precise predictions, we know that it is still occurring.

There's parallels with the resistance to government regulation. Once the state governments started to close businesses because of COVID, there was some backlash to this choice. After months of this decision, when people were allowed to go back into these businesses, that's when another rise in cases started.

The only real association I have with communism is the one I make with China. I've just heard over my life that China's government is very involved in the regulation of their economy, their involvement with regulation of child rearing, as well as very recently learning about how they use a certain group of Muslims to do forced labor.

I think communism is demonized in American society and painted as the ultimate evil. This is kind of funny because communism is a much more equitable society than the one we live in now.

They started with the data, and then they were taking their fallacies one by one and getting past those so that they were forced to acknowledge the data.

Note the nature of Shermer's skepticism.

He said something like, "Did I switch sides (i.e. go from not believing in climate change to believing in climate change) too soon?"

Rather than a knee-jerk, "Yes! I did switch sides too soon!" he instead looked into the quality of the evidence. What did the emails actually say? What did the investigations conclude?
