Mitch:
Frenchie's older brother, at the beginning of the book he sacrifices himself to save Francis. This shows courage, kindness and a good bond between them. He is very caring for his brother and would do anything to save him.

Miigwaans (Miig):
As an elder, he is a little of a father figure to the group.

Minerva:
The eldest of the group, she is not very talkative and stays silent a majority of the time. She is wise and has a lot of knowledge.

Rose:
Frenchie's love interest, it is love at first sight.

When an indigenous is caught, he is brought to a residential school, where they harvest the bone marrow. Residential schools are typically known to have the purpose of assimilating the non-white to the catholic religion.

Survival:
One of the major themes and important part of the story is the survival of Frenchie's group. Not only them but all of the indigenous needs to survive and hide from the people who came from the cities.
