Deafness and hard of hearing are both hearing impairments but they affect the student in different ways. A student that is deaf will not usually use hearing as their main method of gaining information. They might use reading or sign language instead, for example. A student that is hard of hearing, however, will usually still use hearing as their main method of gaining information with the help of an aid, such as a hearing aid.

Hearing impairments can be identified at an audiologist with the help of an audiometer. A common method of measuring hearing loss is the air conduction audiometry method. Hearing loss is graphed on an audiogram, which shows what can be head in the unit decibels (dB). Another method is the bone conduction audiometry method, which measures hearing using bone conduction rather than air.

The most common way of typing hearing loss is with the categories conductive hearing loss, sensorinueral hearing loss, and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. Conductive hearing loss is when there is something physical causing the hearing loss. sensorinueral and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder hearing loss is caused by problems with the neurons and nervous system. Most students affected by deafness and hearing loss attend regular schools, in regular instruction classes. However, when the the students main form of communication is sign language, a non-traditional school where all students are affected by deafness or hearing loss is sometimes preferred. This allows for the student to better make friends and participate in class.

Adaptations and accommodations for hearing impairments can include, but aren't limited to, visual aids, special seating arrangements, hearing loops, a sign language interpreter, and captioned videos. One device that can also be used is called a frequency modulated transmission device. When using this device, the teacher wears a microphone that is directly connected to a type of hearing aid that the student has. Thus allowing both the student and the teacher freedom of mobility. Speech therapy is also often utilized for social and behavior purposes. A high percentage of students affected by hearing impairments also have problems with speech.
