Dally's Motivation

Dally’s motivation is Johnny. He does a lot of things because of how he feels about Johnny. One example is when he helps Johnny, and Pony escape from the city. “ Dally walked us back to the door, turning off the porch light before we stepped out. “Git goin’ take care kid”(54). Another example is when Dally kills himself, because Johnny dies. Dally’s actions are influenced on what Johnny does, or what happens to Johnny.

One of Dally’s strengths is his street smarts. His street smarts have helped him survive for a long time “Dally growing up in the streets”(77). Another strength is his strength in generals. In fights Dally usually wins because he is so strong. Those are just some of Dally’s many strengths.

Dally has a lot of strengths, but he also has weaknesses. For example, his love for Johnny. Yes it was good, but sometimes Dally would get to carried away. Like the time when Johnny died. Dally felt like he had nothing so he pretty much killed himself. “Even as the policemen's guns spit fire into the night I knew that was what Dally wanted”(131).

Another weakness is Dally’s friends outside of the gang. A lot of his friends are not really good people, and can probably get him into more trouble than he is in already.

Type of Character

Dally is not a protagonist or antagonist, but he is an important character. He is more of a dynamic than static, but he’s not super important like Pony. Dally is more of a flat character, because it does tell about him, but it doesn’t peel to the core of the onion. Dally pops up in the story a lot. When Johnny, and Pony ran to him after they killed Bob.

“He handed us a gun and a roll of bills”(53). Also when the church started on fire, Dally helped Pony, and Johnny. Even though Dally got a burn from the fire, that couldn’t stop him from fighting in the rumble. In the book it shows a lot about what he is like, but it doesn’t describe why he is the way he is. It says that he first went to jail when he was 10, but it doesn’t explain why. Or what happened to his family.

Character Test

The personality test we took about Dally gave accurate results. One example was that it states Dally is disorganized. This is true, because Dally has no house, he always gets drunk even though he’s seventeen, and gets in trouble with the police a lot. “He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled dunks, jumped small kids, he did everything”(10). The test also states that Dally is impulsive. One example of when Dally was impulsive was when Johnny died. He was controled by his emotions, and felt like he had nothing. So he killed himself.
