         <title>Description and Background of Earth Science</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Earth Science is the study of Earth's atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere.&nbsp; The atmosphere of Earth includes the air and all of the gasses upon which life depends. The biosphere includes all of the life, all ecological systems, and the relationships between them.&nbsp; The hydrosphere is the water system on Earth.&nbsp; This includes but is not limited to the oceans, the water that is in the atmosphere, and the water that is located underground.&nbsp; The lithosphere is the upper mantle and crust of the earth.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Water Cycle</strong>-the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.<br><br><strong>Atmosphere</strong>-the whole mass of air that surrounds the Earth.<br><br><strong>Evaporation</strong>- the process by which a liquid turns into a gas.<br><br><strong>Transpiration</strong>-Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. Transpiration is essentially the evaporation of water from plant leaves.<br><br><strong>Condensation</strong>- Condensation is the process of a gas changing to a liquid. In the water cycle, water vapor in the atmosphere condenses and becomes liquid. Condensation can happen high in the atmosphere or at ground level. Clouds form as water vapor condenses, or becomes more concentrated.<br><br><strong>Precipitation-</strong>Precipitation is any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the Earth. It comes in many forms, like rain, sleet, and snow. Along with evaporation and condensation, precipitation is one of the three major parts of the global water cycle.<br><br><strong>Runoff</strong>- Runoff is nothing more than water "running off" the land surface. Just as the water you wash your car with runs off down the driveway as you work, the rain that Mother Nature covers the landscape with runs off downhill, too (due to gravity). Runoff is an important component of the natural water cycle.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Books About the Water Cycle</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"The Magic School Bus- Wet all over" written by Patricia Relf, illustrated by Carolyn Bracken.&nbsp; Another fun and educational adventure with Mrs. Frizzle and her class, this time focused on the water cycle. In typical Magic School Bus fashion, the class goes through the process themselves-- evaporating, condensing, raining, and then making their way to the ocean again. Fun! <br><br>"Down Comes the Rain" was written by Franklyn Branley, illustrated by James Graham Hale. <em>Down Comes the Rain</em> is a straightforward, kid-friendly explanation of the water cycle that is made even more clear through Hale's bright pen-and-ink illustrations. This title covers all the basics like how clouds form, why rain occurs, how water is recycled, etc. This title uses kid-friendly language and illustrations but also includes scientific explanations that are often absent from more 'cute' titles on the water cycle. And unlike most other books on this list, this title is great for working into your introductory water cycle lessons -- when you are just starting to discuss the topic-- because this book focuses on defining and explaining components of the water cycle. As always, Franklyn Branley's explanations are clear and kid-friendly.<br><br>"Did a Dinosaur Drink this Water?" written and illustrated by Robert E. Wells.&nbsp;<em>Did a Dinosaur Drink This Water</em> is another fun and educational title from Robert Wells! This title covers a lot of ground, all related to the earth's water supply. About half the book is devoted to the water cycle, with the main characters flying around in an odd little helicopter to see the water cycle in action. And, in addition to discussing the water cycle for kids, this book touches on other water-related topics like ocean currents, ocean and freshwater habitats, hydroelectricity, and water conservation.<br><br>"A Drop Around the World" was written by Barbara Shaw McKinney and illustrated by Michael S. Maydak. This book presents the water cycle through the journey of a raindrop around the world in the sky, on land, underground, and in the sea.&nbsp; It is seen in liquid, solid, and gas states.&nbsp;<br><br>"One Well: The Story of Water on Earth" written by Rochelle Strauss and Illustrated by Rosemary Woods. This nicely illustrated, readable title about water conservation demonstrates that all the water on the earth (in the atmosphere, oceans, rain...) comes from one well--a well we depend on for survival. It covers water usage, pollution, and conservation topics.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>
