Hi everyone, our group is going to talk about a serious issue that many of you may have already notice: qualities of your personal belongings are getting lower under an unnoticeable speed. Such of a belonging of yours can be as big as a car or as small as your cellphone. Their looks are better than before, but under the surface more and more cheaper materials, such as plastic, are replacing better materials such as metal. Once these devices are broken and have to be brought to a shop for a repair, even just a simple replaceable component, the repair bills come after it are tend to be really expensive, sometimes even go beyond the price of a brand new device. Therefore, customers have to give up on the old ones and purchase new ones.
(Image: bent iPhone 6)

Cutting down costs is not the only reason that today's product's quality is going downhill. Consumers' choices in the market is a large factor effecting the direction of one or more productions as well. A same type of products' quality can be listed into three classes: High quality with high price, middle quality with fairly high price, and low quality with low price. This makes the expensive products will have weaker sales than its cheaper competitors. Also it will last long because of a higher quality of the expensive product and makes its customers won't repurchase as often as they do on other cheaper products. It leads to high quality product's reduction in the whole market share.
（Image: Gresham's Law: Bad money drives out good money.）

Setting up a law of quantized production standards can be the most effective way to control one type of product from different producers in a relatively free market. This method can benefit both customers and society. For example, before the year 1999, there wasn't one emission standard in Canada and all kinds of vehicles were used without considering it was polluting or not. It not only caused poor air quality, also made many Canadian unhealthy. In the year 1999, the Environment Canada aligned Canadian emission standards with the United States of America's standards and solved the situation.

The weakness or the drawback of this solution is consumer's willing of choose the products they like must yield to the law. If the law makes a type of product's general quality go up, the price will go with it, and then customer will have no choice of a lower quality but cheaper product.
(Image: by ROLAND MAGUNIA)

As the saying goes, everyone can vote with their money. The sales number will tell producer that the customers are like their products or not. Therefore, if a product is poorly made then don't buy it, then it will be out of the market. After that the producer will know that they will have to bring up the standard. The best example is Google Glass. Its concept was good, but once it hit the market all buyers noticed that it was not only expensive and hard to use, also very dangerous if using in public, especially while driving. Almost all of its customers went away from it and soon the Google Glass was out of the public market. (Luckerson. 2015)
(Image: Google Glass Meme)

The two major drawbacks are:
First, different producers will react differently to their consumers while one or two of their products have problems. Second, this solution will take more time and consumer's money to make an effective change to a type of product, sometimes even lives. It's uncontrollable hen producers have choices to recall and improve these products or just simply ignore the situation in order to limit cost of reproduction.
(Image: Being Cheap Meme)

Geniuses are hard to find, but when they do bring revolutionary inventions to existing industry, it will be a complete change. Just like radio broke through record companies controlled market many years ago, it changed entire industry of music and every single producer had to follow the new standard to make music. (Media-commons. 2012) Or before Steve Jobs' iPhone, there were only button cellphones, and then Steve changed everyone's opinion on phones also the standard of producing a phone. (Asiado. 2011) Or Bill Gates changed how to operate home computers. (Freiberger. 1982)
(Video: Steve Jobs and his new phone - presentation)

In Conclusion, there is no such a method that can solve every problem that everyone has. Government regulations can benefit a larger part of the population but a small amount of people's choice of products will be limited. Consumer selection will have a long term effective on the entire industry but there is far less noticeable changes in short term. And geniuses' great inventions will change entire industry in one night but until then it will remains quite.
Thank you for listening! We hope you have learnt something from our presentation.
