1. The film is a tribute to those soldiers who lost their lives during the 28 battalion, and also for the ones who didn't lose their lives, It is for those who survived also. It is an overall respect and honour for those who risked their lives, and gave their lives .

2. I think the main message of this film is to honour the dead, but also to show how these Maori soldiers come from the same regular places, they live their lives like any other boys would, It is to show how they strengthen overtime and how they bond together even though they are surrounded by war. They are surrounded by death, which makes them value each other and themselves a lot more, they never know who might die next, they looked out for each other and constantly had each others backs.

3. This film shows insight to the lives, it shows recognition to those who risk their lives. The film helps people understand their way of living, which also helps people respect them and honour them. Giving us insight of what it was like for them .

4. The film is set in a house in italy, during World war II

5. I think this is because he displays the nature of young boys, rather than war, It is displaying bonds and strength. How they are still so humorous throughout the unruliness. It shows how calm they can be in such a serious moment.

6. The raven in the film is a representation of death, The raven is introduced in the film near the start, you see the soldiers waiting for it to come. Before the raven comes, the soldiers are having a good time, almost forgetting that there was a war going on, once it arrived, the whole vibe gets tense, they express fear, and grow serious. it brings the destruction, and is deliberately made oversized to emphasise the fear. The bird comes in to show the back, because it shows how vulnerable the men are. How the back of the body is more vulnerable because it is where you can’t see.
The Manaia is a piece of jewellery/art known in Maori culture, the manaia sits on the floor in an empty room. I think it represents their territory, that the Maori were there, and they left the Manaia as a sign that they were there family and culture is.

1.why did Waititi make this film: It was Waititi's tribute to soldiers of the 28th Battalion. it is a film to honor/respect and remember those who served for us in the second world war, those who were lost and weren't.

2. what do you think the main message is in this film: this film takes place amongst a group of maori soldiers who all come from the same place who have a unique bond, strengthened by their characteristics. it is a message of the unity amongst them with the cruelty of the war surrounding them.

3. how does this film calebrate the maori battlion: To me this is barealy a question. a film dedicated to a maori battlion is self explanatory and it was clearly made to remember those and respect them. it is little known knowledge that maoris went to war and giving us a insight of what it was really like to be there and to show there success is a great film to calebrate for. it's a rare thing for such a film to be based on maoris.

4. where and when is the film set:
The film is set in italy, World War II in the insight of six maori soldiers.

5. Why does Waititi say, 'This film is about the vitality of life?' : waititi said 'this wasn't about war this film was about the vitality of life' i think when waititi says this he means its based on the trust and bond of the six soldiers, displaying there strength/'vitality' of there unity to get them through chaos. not as a group of soldier but like brothers.

6. The film has a raven and a Manaia in it, explain what these two objects are: The raven in this film is a clear representation of death. The raven is introduced immediately in this film and you can clearly see the soldiers waiting for it to leave and as soon as it does they make a break to move somewhere up the front battle line to a higher and more secure point. Moments before the second time it comes the soldiers were having a positive moment and then they notice it and everyone is silent, moments again after it leaves they move on as well, shortly after this the camera angle drops to the ground to display a toy soldier and the Manaia (a art peace/jewelry known in Maori culture as a mythical creature) sits on the ground of the abandoned room they had set ground in. To my belief it was left there as a sign the Maori had been there

Catherine Donovan + 18●1m

1. Why did Waititi make this film?: The film was made to honor of the 28th Battalion. Waititi wanted to capture the feeling that in the darkest of situations there are
some events that stand out, brief moments that show how we humans seek out the light,
the joy in life, regardless of our surroundings or situation.

2. What do you think the main message is in this film?: I think the main message of the film is to tribute to the fallen soldiers of the 28th Battalion and other Māoris who died in WW2. I feel like this film is very important as it shows a tribute to all the fallen soldiers and to everyone who lost family members, this film also educates people who don't know who the 28th Battalion are.

3. How does this film celebrate the Māori Battalion?: It celebrates the Māori Battalion by making a short film paying respect to the ancestors and family who have lost loved ones by showing people a small moment in a big war

4. Where is the film set?: The film is set in Italy. Italy is a country in Europe with points of interest such as the Colosseum and the Leaning tower of Pisa.

5(1). Why does Waititi say, 'This film is about the vitality of life?': To show the bond, respect, trust to each other by joking around, smiling and making eye contact. This gave them a brief break from the war. They deserved it by taking their minds away from all the killing and fighting around them.

5(2). The film has a raven and a manaia in it, explain what these two objects are: A raven is a bird that usually appears black and acts similar to a crow. In this film the raven represents death and bad luck which appears frequently in this film. The Manaia is a mythological creature in Māori culture, and is a commonly found in Māori carving and jewellery. The Manaia is usually depicted as having the head of a bird, the tail of a fish and the body of a man.

The main message of this film is to try forget about all the negative things that war brings. They 6 Maori battalions that Tama Tu is with try go have a good time while being at war. As he says "This is not a film about war, it is a film about the vitality of life" it shows that they are not all about killing people. They are about the good thing that could come out of war.

3. The main message of the film is to create a bong and a strong relationship between the men. Because without that they would be done.

4. The film is set in World War 2 (1939-1945) in Italy in a bombed out building, they had perfect cover but enough openings for gun fights. It would be a good idea to set up inside of a bombed building because no one would suspect anyone to be alive inside and they would just move on.

5. Waititi says this because he is not focused on the bad things in war like death and losing friends. He's more focused on living in the moment and enjoying the things he has like having good strong people around him and just being alive in general.

5. A Raven is a black bird kind of like a Crow. The Raven in this film represents death and bad luck. Every time the Raven appears in the film something bad happens right after like an ambush or gun fight. A Manaia is a mythological creature in Maori culture. It is mainly a carving from stone or Pounamu used for jewellery and its a symbol that is used as a guardian against evil. There is a scene where one of the soldiers is carving a Manaia with a small knife, eventually he would wear the Manaia carving to protect him from all of the evil around him.

1. The film was made as a tribute to the soldiers that didn't make it, During WW2 and the ones for the 28th battalion, the film is there in honor of the men that went overseas to fight, and for the ones who lost their lives for their families and their country
2. The main message in the short film is that you can forget all the negative things about war and what could happen during war, Their are six Maori Battalion soldiers waiting for night fall and during that time they forget about the war and spend an evening in the ruins of a old Italian house sharing jokes and stories just to pass the time and make their bond stronger as a platoon.
3. The film celebrates the Maori Battalion by showcasing them having a laugh while waiting to go back into the strong grip of war.
4. The film is set in 1940's in Italy, In the ruins of an old house that had been bombed, Aka the old Wellington Hospital.
5. The vitality of life is about the bond between the six men. We see them joking around, and creating a strong bond between them , Because they don't know how long they have to live, they could walk outside and take a bullet and be wounded and die or walk out and survive the battle that's about to start.
6. The raven symbolises a ill omen or in the film death, We seen the raven more than once in the film once near the start and another time it flew into the room reminding them that death is lurking and to pick there next steps carefully.
A Manaia is a mythological creature, In the film their is a scene where one of the soldiers is carving a Manaia, When the soldiers leave the ruined remains of the house they were camping in the soldier that was carving left the Manaia behind as a sign they were once there.

1. Tama Tu, Waitit wanted to capture the feeling of darkest situation in WW2 at Italy. In war the 28th Maori Battalion faced many challenges which they seek out the light of happiness and hope to make their way home.
He created the film for the remembrance of the 28 Maori Battalion that fought in WW2. Waititi also created this film to show honur and respect to the family remembers.

2.This film indicates a pivotal message, Waititi shows his respect an honour to Maori Battalion who gave up their hopes and dreams in life and fought in war. In war these heroes has a strong bond, have each others back and work together as a team during WW 2.

3. This film celebrate the Maori Battalion because it is the only film that told of our men at war. Who were lost to the stat and lives to those who were not. Who gave up all their hopes and dreams in life and fought in war. Its a film, made by us for them that we now take to the world in their honour.

4. The film is set in a bombed city in Europe in bombed and abandoned buildings.

5. Waititi said, "This film is not a film of war, it is a film about a vitality of life". The vitality of life is about the strong bond between the soldiers, to have the spirit of love and comforts shared to another. Joking around and laughing is a sign of trying to forget the misery they are in, team work indicates that they have each others back by doing hand signals and going together and looking side by side when they are on the run. Because they only have each other as a family and it is a moment they don't how long they have left to live.

6. The film has a raven and manaia and both speacial meaning to the troops. The raven symbolises bad luck, death to the 28th Maori Battalion. It appeared about three times in the film near the soldiers, indicates that death is near. When they were laughing and joking around, the raven appeared the last time, the men facial expressions changed or they were sure to be cursed. Whereas the manaia is a sign of protection from death, evil and harm, as they make their way through the battle. It is part of the Maori culture.

1. The film was made as a tribute to those soldiers who died and were lost during the 28 Battalion, it is overall in honor of the men for the world to see and the families of whose family members were lost during the battle.
2. I think that the main message of this film is to show that although the reasoning for the men being out on the battle field was to fight, the men had a special bond, strengthened by their culture and characters.
3. During World War 2 the Maori troops that were fighting in Europe had to entertain themselves in a small house while waiting for the battle to start.
4. The film was set in a bombed building found in a bombed city found in Europe during World War 2. The building looked very dangerous, there was many chances of the men losing their footing and falling through one of the many holes in the floor.
5. The vitality of life is about the bond between the men. We see them joking around smiling because they're showing appreciation for each other because they're living in the moment since they don't know how long they have left to live, they could walk outside their house and get shot.
6. The raven shown in throughout the film about three times, when it was shown the final time it was much bigger, taunting the men, the raven is shown as a symbol of bad luck and when it appears the final time from then on the men were cursed. Manaia is a Maori carving or piece of jewelry represented as a symbol that brings together the Maori culture. To get rid of the tension on of the soldiers sat lent against the wall carving a small piece of wood with a small sharp object he would've found on the ground to fiddle with that represented him and his culture.

I think that the main message of this film is to show how even as these young men were at war, far from home they came together as brothers and shared a strong bond with one another even before going into battle.

3. For Waititi, the men of the 28 (Maori) Battalion are legendary. These were soldiers who were treated unfairly back home but still fought and died for their country because they were warriors at heart.

4.

1. This film was about a bunch of Maori men that are from NZ. He states that this film isn't about a war it's about the vitality life. He wanted to capture the feeling of the darkest situation in life. There are moments where humans seek out the light also the seeking out the joy in life. All these boys have a special bond with other by character building and their culture .They act as brothers towards each other, always being there for one another.
2. I think the main message is that these boys had a great bond, basically classing themselves as brothers. They always stuck together, having each others back. Having to work together to get through the war, relying on each other.
3. This film celebrates the Maori battalion by catching the humor and heart of the soldiers. It's a tribute to the 28 Maori Battalion who were lost, then the lives that were not.
4. This film is set in a house of the front line of Europe. It is taken place during World War ll form 1939-1945 in bombed out buildings. It looked dangerous and unstable to be in. These boys were in that abandoned building for days, anything could've happened.
5. Waititi says " The vitality of life" because he isn't talking about the war he's talking about the bond between the group of boys that stuck together. He was honoring the boys for the good deeds that they accomplished.
6. Throughout this film is has a raven occasionally coming in and out of the scene. The raven is a symbolism for bad luck and the death of the 28 Battalion. This appeared three times in this film, the last time it appeared the men changed their emotions on their face, they didn't have much time to leave. Whereas the manaia is a symbolism for protecting them from death and evil. It releases stress from the men and brings them together from culture.

Seani Eastman 2.1. The films purpose was to show that the feelings of the darkest situations in life. 'This is not a film about war, it is a film about the vitality of life.' Which means that we have to keep strong when we come across problems that occur in life. 'It is how us humans seek out the light and joy in life'. 2. I think the main message in this film is Waititi showing huge honour and respect to those soldiers that sadly didn't make it back. When in war the soldiers had each others back and worked together as a team. the main message is showing that the soldiers were like brothers and had each others back and were always there with the bond that they share. 3. This film was to celebrate the Moari battalion who put there lives on edge to take part in war to represent our country. It is in true honour. 4. The film was set in Italy and during World War 2 in 1939-1945. In an abandoned bombed out buildings. That looked dangerous and that the soldiers looked at risk. 5. When they say the 'vitality of life' it represents the bond between the men and how close they are. When they are joking around and pulling faces at each other it shows that they are living in the moment and not in the future because they don't know when there last time will be with each other as there lifes are on edge. When they are all together it shows that they are really cherishing each others presence, they are like a family. 6. During this film it has a raven and a mania. The raven is a sign of bad luck it reflects back to the 28 Maori battalion and death as it could occur anytime near and around the soldiers. When the raven comes into the film the men go quiet as it reminds them about all the grief and death. That they are in war and have to fight.
