Group 5

If we were to create an original Philippine theater art without cultural significance, what would happen? The play becomes ordinary with no diversity, a substandard and poor meaning and it defeats the purpose of it being a Philippine theater art. So, it is applied in each theater form: musicals, opera, puppetry, and more.

In today’s contemporary Filipino society, Philippine theater art coveys the problems and spread awareness on these problems. For example, “Walang Aray”, a musical, acknowledges the problems and hurt in our families, society, and history, creating a bridge between past and present and that all these wounds are still open and affect our current society. Another one is “Mantsa”, an one-act play, connecting with the contemporary Filipino society by capturing the unspoken sadness, pain, truth, and resentment due to the socioeconomic issues women face in the Philippines like abuse, infidelity, and caregiving problems that are here until today. The protagonist Ligaya, who is unable to speak for herself, mirrors the different perspectives of women in the real world, not only in the play.

Each lesson and message of each act and play creates a big impact on how we used to see things. With the cultural significance in Philippine theater arts reflecting our society, we should be actively aware in this society and stand against these issues. This will continue to be a reminder of our current society and to contribute in creating an encouraging and harmless environment for our contemporary Filipino society.
